Hey guys, big basketball guy here, but have been venturing into baseball recently. I know these are questions that it is better to ask before buying something, but I had little time to decide on this one.
My buddy has an auction website and I decided to check it out about 15 minutes before the auctions were closing. Not much time to make choices, but I ended up winning this baseball. I know about a dozen names on here, but I am not well versed in signed baseballs. Is the amount of fading on here normal for 1974? Obviously I wish it was more vibrant, but I'd love to avoid additional wear to it. I assume sunlight is my biggest enemy here. Assuming no light, will it continue to fade? The autograph I am most worried about is the Satchel Paige. Let's say I put this in the darkest spot on earth, will it be much more faded in say, 15 years? Also, this was marketed as a 1974 NL allstar game signed ball. Obviously some of these guys didn't play in the game, so would this effect any sort of validity to you? It has a Beckett LOA, but it is an interesting group once you get past the guys who played in the 1974 game. These are the players - Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst, Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, Yogi Berra, Joe Morgan, Billy Williams, Tom Seaver, Phil Niekro, Joe Torre, Hank Aaron, Willies Stargell, Johnny Bench, Satchel Paige, Steve Blass, Bob Bailey, Wayn Guisti, Pete Rose, Bill Robinson, Sparky Lyle, Richie Zisk, Richie Hebner, Nellie King, Dock Ellis, Al Oliver, Ken Brett, Danny Murtaugh, Gene Clines, Bob Skinner and Manny Sanguillen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love for this ball to last and hold onto this for decades, but I'm really hoping it lasts ![]() ![]()

Very cool item. I can't help with regard to preservation of the signatures, but came here to say that Giusti is Dave Giusti, pitcher for the Pirates.

Okay, gotcha. I was thinking most of these guys had to either be in the area for the game as a Pirate or retired players who were just at the game. For the NBA, there's a wild amount of old players who attend all star weekend. I was hoping MLB was the same in that regard

You should check to see if those people were on the roster, it wouldn't necessarily be just the players who played in the game. In particular, many of these team signed balls have multiple coaches on them.
Yes, it common for the autographs to be faded on old team signed baseballs, especially if signed in black ball point. The black pigments break down, and the color changes from black to looking more red or brown or grey, making it look faded. Blue ballpoint tends to hold up better than black. |

These sigs will not fade. Just keep it out of the window sill and you'll be fine. This ball has survived almost 40 years and looks pretty good.
100% authentic btw. Signed by players, attendees, and celebs at game. Very cool. ![]() |

I did check the roster and some of the players weren't. I saw that the coaching had at least one person. Maybe it was Berra. Edit - it is Yogi and Schoendienst
I also noticed that Joe Morgan is on the Beckett LOA twice, but Lou Brock is not listed, but he did sign it. My friend picked his signature out immediately, but his name was not on it. Doesn't bother me much, but it is a bit wrong. Thank you as well vthobby! The Lou Brock is on the left ![]()

Thats an awesome find.
I have a warren spahn signed ball that looks unsigned. I think UV rays may have ate the signature even though it was not in direct sunlight. Also have Kareem abdul jabbar's auto on a basketball. It sadly has almost done the same thing. Parents bought it for me as a gift when a kid. I walk by it in my room and i scratch my head. Wish collectibles were not affected by things, but they are. |

Not having Brock (or a complete listing) on the LOA won't hurt.
Good looking, "standard" pass-around ball for All-Star game signatures with a mix of pens, etc. Most of the fading is baked into the ball already, so you shouldn't see much degradation at all from here. Seems like it sold for a reasonable price for the buyer back in 2022.

I didn't know fading can be basically "baked" in. I assume you mean if kept out of the sun right? Like the natural fading should be done? I appreciate the link as well, that is about what I got it for. Seems to be what it's worth, but I don't mind. Very cool thing to have. Thank you as well Thetruthisout. Between your post and the first response in here, I realize I missed they got Dave's name wrong.
