Default Getting started building a set

I wanted to see what recommendations people have for getting started building a set. I’ve decided I want to build the 1956 topps baseball set but not sure where the best place to get a few lots as a starting point would be and what kind of lot should I be looking for. Open to other suggestions as well for the journey but really hoping for a solid start to then start filling in the holes

net54 forums have a lot more vintage and set collectors. Should definitely try there. eBay is a good place to try to win a lot as well. COMC for commons you can check out as well, you can buy a bunch and ship at once.

I'm not a set builder but if I were I'd hit up local card shows and look for those folks with binders of cards for commons. Obviously, that will require patience, finding someone with 1956 Topps and the condition of card you're looking for. I'd hunt down the big dawgs one by one online.

I start with buying some lots, combining the duplicates, selling them, and buying more cards. COMC is a good source and Sportlots.com is another excellent source for singles. Good luck if you go with the 56 set. One of my favorites. I still remember crossing my fingers to see if I had the high bid on the 56 Mantle for my set.

What are some generic price ranges per card to shoot for if buying a lot. Let’s say around vg+/ex or ex-mt/nm

Lower grades should be around $1.50 to $2 a card for lots and goes up from there. COMC has a lot of cards in the $4 to $8 range for commons that look in great condition, but you never know if they have a crease or other issue until you get them into your hand.
