Default Most graded cards 80’ Rickey

I was surprised that Rickey is still being graded that frequently

It'd be easy enough for that to get skewed by one guy grading a stack of 100 of them.

Doesn't surprise me at all. It is a very common card and people will stupidly grade it even with creases, stains, horribly off-center, and rounded corners. People will grade anything these days. They think the card is a 7/8 and they are shocked when it comes back a 4/5.

From this video from three years ago you can see how the population report has changed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wTMS1dmddc&t=2s

PSA 10's added past three years - 2
PSA 9's added past three years - 201
PSA 8's added past three years - 2438
PSA 7's added past three years - 3406

PSA 5's and below
Current POP - 4936
Three years ago - 1739
Added - 3197

Grading this card below a 7 is idiotic. I would only grade this card if it had a chance at an 8 and would be a 7 otherwise.

Percentage of cards 7 and above today - 69.9%
Percentage of cards 7 and above three years ago - 81.2%
Percentage of cards 7 and above graded the last three years 51%

Stop grading crap people!!!

Interestingly enough, a buddy is recently getting back into the hobby and we were discussing the best grade and TPG Rickey RC to get for his brother (lapsed collector) as sort of a gift/carrot to lure him back into the hobby. We're thinking go with a lower grade one to entice him back just in case we fail. This post assures me we won't have much trouble pulling the trigger on this endeavour.

PSA 6 with a new label from eBay auction is the best price/grade ratio right now. Never BIN with a common card like this. Just be patient and you can get a PSA 6 for between $50 and $60.

You're not wrong.

This is real, and this is from ONE guy's submission of 150+ Rickey cards:

Is that two 8's and everything else below for 150 cards???? What are people doing???? This person paid PSA around $3000 to lose money from their raw value. This makes me sick to my stomach.

Shoulda sent every one any sort of decent eye appeal for the grade to a Rickey signing and then slab. At worst you break even.

Looks like a typical EX condition raw goes for $30 or so. A PSA 5 goes for about $60. If this person sent at bulk rate then it's still winning and without the inevitable item not as described cases.

I always look to buy this card and the raw cards truly in EX condition push to $50 and above. You can find a handful of dealers that accurately describe their cards with PSA current grading standards, but that is not the normal.

Really the best way to move these cards is to send raw to Greg Morris and they will get the best price possible. Even the low grade cards with creases will sell for $30 to $40 raw there. They do take a crazy 25% cut, but even with that, a Rickey in PSA 5 shape will be listed in EX-EXMINT shape and will sell for $60 plus and if it is centered it will go for $100 there.

I think it would be profitable at this point to buy centered PSA 5 to 6's of this card, crack them, send them to Greg Morris. I may send some centered raw vintage to them instead of grading to see what happens.

This was from over a year ago when the grading fee alone was $30/card. Then you factor in selling fees, return shipping on 150+ PSA graded cards, and also completely flooding the market with mid-grade cards.

This was the breakdown:

PSA 1: 2
PSA 1.5: 1
PSA 2 (MK): 1
PSA 2: 2
PSA 2.5: 0
PSA 3: 7
PSA 3.5: 1
PSA 4: 24
PSA 4.5: 2
PSA 5: 42
PSA 5.5: 8
PSA 6: 27
PSA 6.5: 0
PSA 7 (ST): 1
PSA 7: 28
PSA 7.5: 0
PSA 8: 2
PSA 9: 0
Mis-cut: 1
Trimmed: 1
Total Graded: 150

And about 6 months earlier, he graded 70 cards with similar mid-grade results:

PSA 1: 8
PSA 2: 6
PSA 3 (MK): 1
PSA 3: 12
PSA 4 (MK): 1
PSA 4: 13
PSA 5: 9
PSA 6: 9
PSA 7: 6
PSA 8: 1
Min size Req: 4
Total Graded: 70

As a collector this is his thing, and we all have our own things to collect, so I'm honestly not knocking it, just noting this since it was right up the alley of what the OP was asking discussing.

No, not at all.

And in my collection, I collect Jamarcus Russell cards, so I can't judge other people and what they do with their money.

If this is for aPC it might make sense $$$ wise. They could have these cards raw lying around or could be finding great deals at card shows. If this is for a flipping venture, it would be insanity!

I put worthless Rik Smits cards in a penny sleeve, top loader, and superior fit sleeve for my PC. Trying to get as many different cards as possible. For some of the cards, the penny sleeve is worth more in the used condition. I hold collecting in a much different way in this hobby. Use GMA for slabbing, I don't care. However, don't be trying to pump up GMA and stating that the card is graded harder than PSA and should be worth just as much.

We are in a weird spot in the hobby where $1 cards need to be graded for $15. Well, that is what the majority of the hobby thinks and what narrative is being pushed on them. If anyone grades a Rik Smits card I won't buy it at a premium. I will buy it at cheaper than a raw card price since I have to exert effort to crack it out of the slab.
