Default **Official Sammy Sosa Showoff Thread**

So, the Barry Bonds thread got me curious about what Sosa card members here have. I know Sammy don't have the following he did in the 00's, but he is my favorite player and what got me into the Cubs and baseball. Know he's not as popular as Bonds, and I really don't even know of any big Sosa collectors, so I hope this thread doesn't disappoint.

So let's see what you got, and if anyone has some not so expensive sweet 90's cards, I'm interested to see what's available.

I don't have the best cards, but here's some favorites:

Sorry for the lousy picture but I'm working and had to grab a screenshot from a larger picture on my phone.
This is from 2001 Upper Deck Legends.
UD Legendary jersey Autographs.
I finished the set and Sosa was one of the harder ones to find.

I have a couple of those Banks/Sosa cards. Auto cards seem to be tough to find for him, at least last time I looked.

One of my all-time favorite Throwback Uniforms.

One of 4 cards I had graded during the home run record chase, also got a 10 on a Mark McGwire Interstate refactor, thought I had won the lottery. Still have all 4.

Nice. Might have to find one of those. I've been wanting to get Sosa relics with all the different things he has. I have all 3 jersey colors, bat, dirt and a base so far. I know he has a glove, ball and foul net at least. They ever do helmets for baseball?

Krusin- love that Legacy.

Sweet cards dudes, let's see more. There's gotta be at least a few hardcore Sosa collectors...

Some cool cards in here! Hope we see more. Being a kid in Milwaukee when they brought the ASG to Miller Park, I’ll never forget his home run derby.

My friends and I all collected Sosa/Cubs players where we grew up (Northside of Chicago). Mostly base but a few inserts and parallels. I knew the gold Sosa would grade poorly, tons of sentimental value attached to it.

My mom got an in-person signature of Sammy at a comedy event along with a number of other Cubs back in 1996. I embedded it into a custom 4x6 "card", one of my earliest forays into custom card making. Primitive compared to my stuff now but fun to see the journey.

These are the base versions /25. One from the series 1 release and one from the Update release. Pretty sure I got these about 10 years ago.

Can't say what Sosa has or doesn't have, but I'd set Ebay searches or search Beckett's database to see what you can find. Or even buy some old Beckett magazines and look through the sets and see what's there.

I actually do have a glove as well. Gold version

Holy #@#@#@#@ I have an extra 6 piece. Guess I'll offer it to you since I'm happy with one of each. Pm me.

Hilarious that a Bonds thread triggers a Sosa association. I wonder what the two have in common???

I wonder why Sosa was so successful in the steroid era compared to other juicers? You'd think there would have been more players that would have hit 60 Homer's. Bonds was great before his cream so his success makes sense.

Wow -- you submitted those back in 1998? The Sosa looks great. Nice color match between the blue foil and vintage Cubs jersey.

He made a mechanical adjustment prior to his breakout season in 1998:

Quote:
Sosa told David Kaplan this week on Sports Talk Live that he “became a great hitter” because of mechanical adjustments. It shouldn’t be ignored that in 2009, the New York Times reported that Sosa was one of 104 players who tested positive for a PED in a 2003 baseball survey. An examination of old game film also makes it clear that Sosa's swing mechanics did indeed play a role.

“The thing that made me a much better hitter was that when I tried to hit, I’d go forward,” Sosa told Kaplan. But when Sosa learned to keep his weight back, “all the breaking pitches that I used to be swinging out front, I had a chance to wait a little bit longer and then hit the ball to right field.”

Sosa went from hitting 36 home runs in 1997 to 66 in 1998. He also improved his batting average from .251 to .308. Jeff Pentland joined the Cubs as the hitting coach during that transition.

“In Sammy’s case, he was getting paid for hitting 30 to 40 homers,” Pentland told Kaplan on ESPN 1000 last week, “but I thought his production levels were below what he was capable of doing, and I just projected him as an All-Star type player.”

Here's my contribution. White gentrified middle aged Samuel. He no longer associates with Sammy, his former self.

But I'm trying to think of my favorite Sosa moment. Tough call between hearing he got a back injury from a sneeze and this one
