I was wondering that too. Maybe because it was from the fan vote, but he felt like the team didn’t actually want him there? Just a guess.

I’m curious as well. Seems like that would be an awesome thing to do and then decline it? Seems weird.. did he have some kinda beef Or falling out when he left the cards?

I mean, come on. The dude played with STL for 5 years. If it wasn't for two AB's, he wouldn't be on the radar here.

As a Brewers fan, all I know is he had about a 2.000 OPS in a NLCS where the Cards eliminated my crew. Dude turned into Ted Williams for a minute there.

If I were him, I'd cement my legacy for my family and accept. The nominating and invitation to get enshrined is odd for a short stint and mediocre career that may have resulted into a Championship, but World Series victories are overrated to the degree, it's a great accomplishment and historical moment, but does not define a team or the players more than longevity statistics like Team Dynasties or record breaking performances.

He sure did. I had finally forgotten about that until this thread popped up. The whole team got hot in the postseason in 2011…Freese and Pujols were otherworldly. Dammit I hate the cardinals.

He did the right thing. There is no way David Freese belongs in the same place as Albert Pujols, Stan Musial, and Bob Gibson.

To me, team hall of fames are meant to tell the story of the team. I am a Phillies fan and Roy Halladay was only on the team for 4 years and they retired his number. I'm totally cool with it, loved when he was here but he was obviously a Blue Jay for much longer.

I'm split on it.

For one I think it would be amazing for him to be in as that moment was great on the other his career was meh

Was it a fan vote? If so I 100% agree with David. But if the team offered all on their own…you can’t turn it down, imo.

He's a WS hero. Take the honor. Team hall of fames are a joke anyway. Making it more about himself by doing this honestly.

Sigh.

I did a video on how amazing the entirety of his 2011 run was.

https://youtu.be/IoulmydAXro

And lament how those two at bats were so spectacular it overshadowed how amazing he was besides those at bats.

Freese belongs in the Cardinals HOF because the fans voted him in, and this is who it’s for. Not a whole lot more complicated than that.

I was hoping the story was going to be that he declined the offer because, after taking several years to think it over, he had come to the realization that he “hated the Cardinals” also.

agreed

he's a hero, not a legend. and the HOF, even a team HOF is for legends. very humble of him to decline that honor.

that's awesome.

It’s a joke. Everyone who did anything gets in.

I think part of it was simply he didn’t want to come back to STL as much as they’d want him too

He had the monster plyoff run & was the hometown kid so I get the fan support but I think it's fair that he didn't see himself as being at the level of the other Cardinals greats.

But also his statement about "who (he) was during that tenure" makes me think that his personal issues are still on his mind & he wants to move on from that time in his life.

From USA Today: "This is something that I have given an extreme amount of thought to, humbly, even before the voting process began," Freese, who was initially elected to the Cardinals Hall of Fame via fan vote, said in a statement. "I am aware of the impact I had helping the team bring great memories to the city I grew up in, including the 11th championship, but this honor means more to me.“

There’s a committee that selects one player to be enshrined and 6-10 players to be voted on by the fans. Freese was in that latter group.

There’s 53 players in the Team Hall. Some are legends, some are Jason Isringhausen.

What the F are you talking about? Your post doesn’t make any sense to my response at all.

It is a joke, it’s another way for the Dewitt’s to make money and another way for the self serving BFIBs here in STL to get a boner about “baseball heaven”. It’s silly, means nothing.

Not sure what that has to do with the guys you named

This is my point. It’s silly. Why is Isringhausen in it?cause he lives around the area and can come to stuff and wear his red jacket.

Agreed.

It's so rare now for someone in a position of advantage to do the right thing that people automatically think something's up.
