Confusing tracking

I have a card I mailed where the status on the auction reads "Delivered" but if I click on the tracking it shows delivered, but around 4 hours later reads "Out for delivery".
The buyer claims the card hasn't been delivered. This all happened on Friday the 12th and I was hoping the status would change on the tracking on Saturday and the card would be delivered.
No such luck.
Maybe it gets delivered today, but if not am I still liable for refunding the buyer since one status shows delivered while the tracking shows out for delivery?

I would contact USPS and ask them to open a case - they can track down when/where it was delivered and ask the carrier about it.

Very likely, human error involved.

Confusing indeed. Buyer should inquire via local post office as to what could have possibly happened.

Going off the tracking, I would lean towards buyer is telling the truth, just because it's so unusual. But you obviously cant be 100% sure one way or the other.

The interesting thing here is who side ebay takes if it does come to a claim. Since technically showing delivered, I imagine they almost have to side with you as the seller.

I think the buyer's telling the truth. He's been messaging me a lot, but seems to understand it's not my fault but the post office's.
I've asked him if he could check with his post office since it seems thats where things went south. I don't think he has.
The tracking on this has been pretty strange. Looking at the second pic it states "pre-shipment info sent USPS awaits item" on May 10th at 3:44 AM. But in the first pic you can see "USPS in possession of item" on May 9th at 3:22 PM. That makes no sense.
I'm going to put in for a trace after this post and see what happens.
And yes, I'm curious, very curious obviously, how Ebay will deal with the auction showing item delivered but tracking saying out for delivery.

If you havent already, I would enter the tracking into the actual USPS site for the tracking history (I believe the screenshots are ebay tracking. Sometimes ebay tracking is a little wonky).

I've seen that where it says stuff like pre-shipment or awaiting shipment in the middle of a shipping history, but it's usually when there is some kind of hand-off (UPS to USPS etc), or Mail innovations or something like that. For a regular shipment, does seem unusual, but I would check on the main USPS site.

I had a similar situation last year, the tracking on EBay looked like yours. The buyer contacted me saying he never received it. I asked him to look at the USPS website which showed delivered, and then he claims he found it behind some bushes under his mailbox. He saw the weird EBay feedback and tried to pull a fast one and got caught.

This was one from a repeat buyer just west of Clear lake Iowa that left me wondering about the USPS. This buyer didnt even acknowledge it was USPS at fault and gave no warning but opened up a case. Item was delivered a day later and ebay closed case. Sad thing is being from Iowa originally knowing where Garner and and having sold multiple items to this buyer along many conversations on ebay messages in last 3 years the guy opened a case rather than try to wait it out. I do believe that the case system from INR needs to be changed to allow for delivery on FC with tracking and ESE as they are both covered by ebay, paypal , and CC companies / banks. This need to receive instant gratification in society needs to end. We are not Amazon or Burger King.

Looks like about 2.5 weeks with no item I don't call that needing instant gratification. Buyer was fairly patient.
