Default Josh Gibson PC

Hey everyone, just wanted to show off some Josh Gibson PC cards. His autos and rookie are totally out of the question, so here are some cards that I targeted instead. All are "jersey number" 20/x. Thanks for looking

Nice cards. Gotta love Josh Gibson! His rookie is an interesting card as it was issued about 3 years after he passed. Even a really poor condition example can go for around $10k.

It was issued as part of a Puerto Rican Winter League set back in 1950. Here's a nice example that went for $27k back in 2005. It'd probably get $100k today:

Definitely a sweet one and I would predict that PSA 7 would sell for much more than $100,000. Also have some of these in poor condition sold for around $10k, cause if so, I would be interested in buying one haha

Love it! Thanks for sharing. I have a few of my own, and still trying to obtain a couple more specific cards once I can find them...

Topps issued a Josh Gibson card in Series 2 last year, iirc, amidst a die-cut insert checklist.

I'm glad I bought his living set card that came out recently. I love the look of vintage without the vintage price

I have an extra copy of the Series 2 die cut if you’d be interested. No charge

Thank you for your generosity, but I have a few copies already. Maybe someone else in this thread would be interested in getting one!

Awesome! Major props for your collection

That Toleteros is a "if I won the lottery I'd own this" type of card

He didn’t have a rookie until this one? That’s wild. Oscar Charleston’s first card was in ‘24.

I imagine it must’ve been just how things aligned with when the players might’ve been playing in Cuba and the years that Cuban cards were made…?

Yeah, it’s pretty wild. Gibson was immensely popular in Puerto Rico. He still holds the record for highest batting average in Puerto Rico Professional Baseball history (.480).

Here's some details on the set…

Issued during the Puerto Rican Winter League season of 1950-51 and inserted into tobacco packages, this Toleteros series consists of 178 cards each measuring 1-3/4” by 2-1/2”. Each card front features a color player image with a large white border area and his name in black print along the bottom edge; backs are blank. Renowned for its exquisite photography, this Toleteros offering hosts various Negro League stars and Major League players. It is anchored by Luis Arroyo, Willard Brown, Buster Clarkson, Piper Davis, Luke Easter, Wilmer Fields, Josh Gibson, Roger(s) Hornsby, Alonzo Perry, George Scales, Bob Thurman and Artie Wilson. Variations include Clarkson, who appears as a member of three different teams. The series is sequentially numbered from #'s 1 through 180, but no #'s 19 and 20 were issued, making the obscure and incredibly rare set complete at 178 subjects.

This is the first card of Gibson that is issued within a set but he has some postcards out there, issued as early as 1930, while on the Grays and Crawfords teams.

Probably from the 1994 Ted Williams Negro League Set.

OP - he does have a Game Used Tier 1 Relic that is pretty sweet! (but a little pricey)

One Gibson that’s cool and quasi-affordable is his 1974 Laughlin Old Time Black Stars card. I love that set and the Gibson is fun.

I have an Oscar Charleston from this set. Not the highest production quality ever. But I am glad that it exists.
