Default Flawless corners, edges, and surfaces = PSA 10 so long as min centering req met?

If a card has perfect corners, edges, and surfaces, and centering is no worse than 60/40 on the front and 75/25 on the back, do the PSA grading standards say this card must be a 10 or is there still wiggle room for PSA not to award a 10 under their standards? I get that they can do whatever they want -- my question is about what the result SHOULD be under its own published standards in this scenario. I recently sent a 1980 Rickey Henderson PSA 9 in for review that I believe is perfect except for centering on the front, which at its worst is 58/42 (measured using PSA's own high resolution photos), and it came back as a PSA 9 with a little post it note that said "centering" and which pointed to the spot of the card where the centering is 58/42. Frustrating because centering is the one aspect of card grading that is objective and if the centering satisfies PSA's requirements for a 10 then how can that be the basis for not giving it a 10?

For a 10, PSA says the centering must not exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 on the front. The range is to account for how centering presents in different issues. A bordered card with 60/40 centering L/R and T/B isn’t generally going be get a 10 because it doesn’t have gem mint eye appeal. Whereas a borderless card with the same centering might.

Let's see it. A henderson 10 is a white whale if there ever was one.

58/42 sounds like it would look off center, and the decision to grade as 9 seems reasonable and consistent with their scale, for the reasons Khal mentioned.

Ok, so what you're saying is the eye appeal factor justifies a 9 notwithstanding the fact that 58/42 is better than 60/40? I dont have sour grapes on this, I'm just trying to figure out if this is how it could be a 9 if it technically satisfies the minimum centering requirement listed in the standard

Amazing card! I think the rougher cut on the edges paired with the centering ruined it chances. Rare to see the colors so vivid on that card without any print defects.

I think PSA has given themselves wiggle room to make a subjective call by including the 55 to 60 range. Otherwise, they would just have the 60/40 value.

So close, but yes, the way they wrote the standard gives them a judgement call opportunity. no descernible tilt though which so many seem to have. Awesome card. Henderson 9's are no joke.

Definitely just the centering, but I do wonder if there are psa 10 examples with the same centering.

The common man will NEVER receive a PSA 10 on this particular card. It’s under population control. I’d be happy with a 9 any day.

Man that's an absolute BLAZER! Has to be one of THE nicest PSA 9s around. Love seeing the slight factory fuzzy edges. If you decide to sell, you should easily get a solid premium over other 9s.
