Howdy, pardon my ignorance, but I'm curious f there any newer sets that feature original art made only or the cards? Thinking early 90s stuff like the Impel Marvel Universe which only had one repurposed piece of art (the Stan Lee card).

At the moment there is:
2016, 2018, and 2020 Marvel Masterpieces- 2016 was all done by Joe Jusko, 2018 was Simone Bianchi and 2020 was done by Dave Palumbo. There is also 2017 Fleer Ultra Spider Man and the recently released Fleer Ultra Avengers- if you look you might find blasters of this at Target or Walmart for $30 per.

Yea as mentioned all the Masterpieces sets 2016-present are entirely new art.
The fleer ultras: 2017 ultra spiderman, 2018 ultra x-men, 2022 ultra avengers, as well as 2013 Marvel Retro, 2015 Marvel Retro, and 2019 Marvel Flair have original art base sets, but the insert subsets are often rehashed art (although some are original). For example, in Fleer Ultra Avengers, the Ultra Stars and medallions are rehashed art, but the 3x3 connected image and (I believe) the chess piece inserts are original. In 2013 Marvel retro, the PMGs, Intimidation Nation, and Metal Hardware are all rehashed but the Marvel Universe throwback subsets are original, etc. Besides those sets, I believe most other UD marvel art sets are basically entirely rehashed art. This includes Vibranium, marvel annual sets, Marvel Now, marvel premier, 2007-2008 Masterpieces (mostly), marvel beginnings, and Metal universe sets.

Comparing the 90s Impel/Fleer/skybox era to the current marvel era
90s Impel/Fleer/skybox: nearly every set all original art (94-95 flair had reused art but it was creatively enhanced). UD marvel era (2007-current): Most sets rehashed art. Some mixed with original base and rehashed inserts. Only a few with all new art (Masterpieces. Edit: also Marvel Unbound). Rittenhouse marvel era(2007-2014ish): Rehashed art. This is one reason why 90s era is better (there are other reasons including card tech and design). If it werent for the 90s era missing two major things: 1)sketch cards (outside of the 97-98 sketchographs which were late and obscure in the run and only B&W), and 2) numbered cards, it would be a landslide in favor of 90s- see sig. 90s still wins in my book, but it's closer. The best thing to come out of newer marvel sets is mainstream sketch cards imo.

Interesting, I stand corrected! The Marvel Premier base, especially the later ones like 2019, have that 'polished' look that I just assumed was from comics, but you are right, it's original.

So if we are tabulating newer Marvel sets that have at least some original art
-Marvel Masterpieces 2016-present -Marvel Unbound (a weekly epack release) -Marvel Premier 2012-present -2013 Marvel Retro -2015 Marvel Retro -2017 Fleer Ultra Spiderman -2018 Fleer Ultra X-men -2022 Fleer Ultra Avengers -2019 Marvel Flair -2007 Marvel Masterpieces (just the Jusko header base card and possibly some of the insert sets). Missing anything?

Don't forget about Marvel Anime. Also, I think Marvel Ages had some original art inserts (Saturday Morning Cartoons and Totally Toys).

Good call. How could I forget Peach Momoko’s 2020 Marvel Anime?
Maybe I shouldn’t be as down on UD….seems to be about a 1:1 ratio of rehashed art sets vs ones containing original art.

Anyone have additions since this was last posted? I try to follow Marvel releases but I struggle to keep up.

Ones that immediately come to mind are 2023 Marvel Flair and 2024 Fleer Ultra Wolverine (at least the base are original art). 2023 Marvel Platinum has some great looking original art…that base set was like half OA, half rehashed art…broken down by low series vs high series. 2024 Marvel Masterpieces Grego has awesome original art. 2024 Marvel Masterpieces 92 Platinum has that great 90s feel (since it’s a reprint of the 92MM set). Idk what you’d call that- it’s “original art” as in its the 92MM art Jusko did just for that set, but it’s reprint. “Pseudo-original art” I guess.

Marvel Platinum (1-100) is GREAT for original art. The art is generally fantastic, but also comes with a lot of variety. See below: you have base art, cover variants, on-card artist autos (which are often criminally cheap), and then art variants and art variant autos for some characters. Then add in a thousand parallels and there is a ton of great looking stuff to collect.
I remain sad that Venom and Miles didn't get low series cards in this. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sent from my Pixel 7 Pro using Tapatalk Last edited by LittleJimmies; 07-11-2025 at 09:28 AM. |

Agree on the great looking cards in Platinum…original art such as
![]() ![]() They should have just keep it to 100 cards only OA in the base set- not a fan of how UD tacked on rehashed art in a high series. You could always just collect the OA low series in it of course. 2024MM 92 Platinum is probably one of the best sets if you’re trying to capture the nostalgic feel of the 90s. The art is iconic and cards are beautiful. That is my top choice.

Appreciate the info yall! I’m gonna look at these sets this evening!
Sounds like they are starting to lean in to original art a little more. Is the new marvel chrome set all rehashed? |
