Default In Case Anyone Needed a Reminder to NOT Buy "Player Worn"

Not that this is news to most, but figured I'd help illustrate the façade that is "player worn" for the newer collectors. Stop shelling out big $ for player worn!

Parker patch in a Hill card, Isabella in a Hopkins card, and Funchess in a DJ Moore card

I've more or less gotten to the point I value an on card autograph over a modern 'player worn' autographed card.

Always rather just grab someone from the "old day" of around 06. I so miss 06 NT. Those were the days.

I view jersey cards just as mixed medium cards. It's like holographic, gold foil, dufex, acetate, etc. If it nicely accents the card, cool! Otherwise I'm assuming it's off the rack unless specifically stated otherwise.

Good call. The patch is just part of the card design. Has been that way for a good while.

I'm surprised that there are still people who get flustered over this.

Looks like a label for the jersey so they know who wore it at the rookie premier.

That’s a good way to look at it, just funny to see jerseys explicitly meant for other cards. My hope is that newer collectors understand this.

Yep that’s exactly what it seems

I saw the Dolphins one this morning on Twitter, wow to there being two more.

I haven't bought a jersey piece card in years, but this is ridiculous. I'd rather have a manufactured film cell card from a movie than this junk at this point.

Jersey pieces are basically the same as the manufactured patches Topps puts in the baseball blasters

Exactly. These are manufactured jerseys. When Panini tells us "the enclosed authentic memorabilia is not from any specific game or event", I believe them.

An off-the-rack jersey meant for a retail shop is authentic. A jersey is memorabilia. A jersey from a Nike warehouse is not from any specific game or event. Panini isn't even saying "the enclosed player worn memorabilia" anymore. Maybe players wear them, maybe not. The only thing Panini is guaranteeing is that the piece of fabric wasn't made by a counterfeit 3rd party.

I have viewed them as manufactured patches for awhile now, especially after the new disclaimer about not from any player, game, event, etc. etc. etc. Basically, they cut any jersey/table cloth and throw the pieces on the cards. I don't know why people paid thousands for non-used Shields and Logomen. They don't mean anything to me.

Jersey cards, at least in football, have been trash/filler for a solid decade now - if not 15 years. This is why. They didn't make the language on the cards so vague for nothing.

Who wants to pay six figures for what amounts to a manufactured patch and an on card auto /99?

In Basketball, UD Game used jersey cards mention "piece of jersey worn by that specific player in an official NBA game" on the back. I don't think Panini cards mention jersey worn by that specific player. Panini's verbiage is 'the enclosed game-worn material is guaranteed by Panini" Does that mean there is a possibility that the game-worn patch could be from other players?

1. UD- It says worn by Jordan

2. Panini- It does not say worn by Lebron-

I have always accepted any card with this language on it as including a swatch of "game jersey" from whatever the cheapest player jersey they could acquire from any game of that team - not the player depicted. Actually, most of the time, I figure it's just a piece of jersey from whatever company gave them a discount on 100 Lakers jerseys and never 'game used' or ever in the presence of anyone other than the worker who packed them, the FedEx delivery person and whoever opened the box at Panini.

It doesn't say worn by LeBron. I hope it's from Lebron 's NBA Finals Game Worn jersey because a 2016 NBA Finals logoman sold for ~200K few months ago.

Sounds like Panini ain't for you.

Stick to mid-high end old school UD. But you're in a bind if you want PWGU of modern players.

Makes formerly coveted cards such as National Treasures RPA a joke on a rope. Very unfortunate and an awful look for the hobby.

I don't think it matters if its game worn or player worn. It may not be from the player on the front of the card.

Old isn't necessarily safe either. A ton of fakes back then. This one still leaves me scratching my head. I am definitely no expert so perhaps I am mistaken, but I didn't know the Bucs ever had a uniform with "Eagles" green on it.

Oh yeah, not saying it was perfect, as that's a definitely oops. And a lot of patches from back then were certainly swapped out, but for the most part you could at least get the promise of it being used in a game. (Obviously still that risk, but looked a lot more likely than it does anymore, of course.)

Still loved so many of the patches from Gridiron Gear back in the day as well.

People pay thousands for unsigned numbered cards that are 1/1's. Why would someone pay less for a 1/1 because it has a meaningless, yet aesthetically pleasing, shield in it as well?

No one is valuing the card based on the standalone value of the shield. The value is in the rarity and desirability of the card itself.

That would be against antitrust laws. A reasonable consumer would assume a swatch on a card, featuring a standalone player, their name, their likeness and their stats belonged to, or was otherwise directly connected to the player featured. Which makes what they are doing now, so wrong.

Dont get me wrong, they used to take generic team jerseys and put them in cards 20 years ago. Like the 1999 Playoff Team Threads cards. But even those cards, called out the material belonging to the team. And featured multiple players in image.

The cards say "not from any particular season or game", as they often get the jerseys direct from the team without knowing when they were game used. Or purchased as game used on the secondary market, without proof of any individual game.

Thats why they dont say "not from any particular player, season or game". The wording is typically open ended, for production reasons, so the card makers can just use a standard template for all memorabilia cards. And not have to change, proof, set and create new wording for each and every card printed.

They was either a production error, or someone on the secondary market pulled out a 1 color patch and put that swatch in there, to sell it for more money as an error card.

At the end of the day, these card companies don't have to fool us with vague language on their cards. Most of these jerseys were store models that are sent to the players, along with cards and stickers to sign.

I know, as I have worked with Panini getting autographs in the past. We are asked to have the player put on the jerseys, and then sign a letter stating as much. Some players put them on and take em right off. Others will put them on, and sit and sign wearing them. And some players think its dumb, dont want to wear them and the handler just says "Yeah, he put it on". It doesnt really matter either way in the end.
