Hey guys, I need some help and advice. I am a lifelong collector who recently started doing subs to PSA. I decided to make a splash and submit my 1968 Nolan Ryan card as my first submission. The good news is that the card is authentic. the bad news is that it was given N6 or minimum size required. Quite a letdown as the card is in SUPERB condition
QUESTION!?! What do I do now? Is there still value? Anybody interested in this? |

Thats always an option I suppose. Nolan isnt my guy though. I would rather let this go to somebody who appreciates it for something that fits in my PC better.

If it's in great condition, consider SGC or BGS. The N6 min size requirement means that they don't believe it was altered or it would have been labeled as such. I have a 2017 Bowman card that was returned N6, but got a BGS 9.5.

Definitely try SGC...quick, cheap, better customer service, and they know vintage better IMO.

Step 1: I would measure the card to see how "close" it is to the cutoff. If it is within 1 mm, might be worth resubmitting or trying a different TPG to see if you can get it holdered. I pack-pulled a rookie Upper Deck Shaq back in 1992, put it in a top loader 30 years ago and included it in a PSA bulk submission 3 years ago. It came back with the same "minimum size" problem. So, it is definitely possible to have an unaltered card come back with this problem.
Step 2: If it is significantly smaller, what is the story of the card? Did you pull it out of a pack years ago? Buy it from a card store in 1968? Buy it online in 2020? If you pulled it out of a pack or bought it a LONG time ago, it is probably not "altered," and you could feel confident selling it as authentic and unaltered - but you would want to disclose the "minimum size" discrepancy as your buyer is likely planning on submitting it to a TPG. But, if you bought it online in the past 10 years, I think you have to assume it has potentially been trimmed - and again, disclosure is key, because a buyer would be very upset if they discover you previously submitted the card, it was deemed altered or ungradable by the TPG, and you failed to disclose that at the time of sale. As for value, I think it has value even if it has been altered, just not nearly as much value as an unaltered PSA 7-8. I am sure enough PSA AUTHENTIC 1968 Nolan Ryan cards have sold in the past couple years to get an idea of the market value. |

Send it to SGC. They have more realistic requirements imo

Send to SGC and report back. If nothing else, they are fast.

SGC is a good next step if you are looking to sell it.
the slabs are an eye sore, but beats raw everyday

As others have said you may as well go the SGC route because now you have some serious doubts about the card. Good luck and I hope it goes well, keep us posted please.

SGC also has an 'authentic' grade, with a sub-note that it didn't meet minimum size.
Difference is, PSA doesnt charge for N6. SGC will charge the grading fee. I would keep trying PSA before I tried SGC. Another option, get it autographed. Then authenticated through PSA, maybe grade the auto only.

I may be wrong, but don't overly long cards also get the N6 designation?

SGC all the way. Had 3 1971 Munson's come back N6's (out of 8) from PSA. Sent them to SGC and they graded them no problem. All 3.
Many people will tell you to send vintage there first anyway. |
