Default What does Topps usually do with unused replacement cards?

I had a quick question regarding the process Topps uses for replacement cards. I know Topps usually makes extras of 1/1’s but leaves them unstamped in the case they need to replace cards. But I was curious what they do to those cards when they are not needed for replacements anymore? I would assume they destroy them but wanted to know if anyone else had any idea of what happens. Thanks

Some old autos appeared in Topps Chrome silver packs...the ones distributed after the extended SP 'RC's didn't get packed out.

Some get stamped with Transcendent VIP party and get distributed later. I think there are a few '18 Sapphire Acuna stamped this way.

Maybe buyback autos for other future products?

I had a luis aparicio redemption card that never was signed and I requested a sub. Got a 2016 Chris sale auto as replacement this past July.

They botch releases, create silver packs, and add them as hits

Do they really print extra 1/1's?

Has anyone ever had to get a replacement on a 1/1? I assume they don't give you a like for like

I’d imagine the best ones go home with Topps executives. Pad that bonus a bit.

Sometimes they are used as replacements for cards that don’t get made. Famously, the 2013 five star baseball release, and especially the dual logo mans, allot of them were never made. A friend and I had several of those and got a mix of cards in exchange, including expired redemptions.

As far as I know, Topps doesn't print extra unstamped 1/1's. They keep back part of the print run for replacements, something like 5%. So some 1/1's do get held back, but they are the regular ones that are stamped.

There have been a few times Topps has reprinted cards to replace damaged cards, but I think they reprinted them after being notified, they weren't printed ahead of time.

Now Panini does print extras that are unstamped.

They do/did print extra 1/1 cards.

2009 Bowman Sterling Red 1/1 sheets printed and given to distributors sans jersey or sticker auto.

2009 Bowman Red Paper Baseball 1/1- At least 106 extra sheets were printed and mailed to one person. There were 44 of sheet #3 mailed to that person. I used to own some of these sheets/cards I gathered during my research, most I hole punched with a odd shape before resale. Had up to 19 of one player. The recepient of the 106+ sheets was communicating while I was buying then clammed up once they learned of my intent or saw the threads I made about it.

I have pics somewhere od peole who own full uncut sheets of superfractors.

They should have COMC deal with redemption cards.
Topps holds the cards for 2 years and after that time,
send the cards to COMC. After the "Topps expired" date, you pay a 25¢ fee for claiming the card and 1¢ a month for as long as they have the card.
This way boxes will never be duds after a few years if they have redemptions...
