I'm starting this thread in an attempt to answer questions the collective may have about promo cards in general and about specific ones. I know there's been a surge of interest in this sometimes arcane sub-hobby category lately and I'm hoping this thread can be a repository for those questions and answers.
My knowledge spans 30+ years of seeking and collecting every type of promo/prototype/sample/product insert/magazine insert/convention etc. non sport card out there. No question is stupid so feel free to ask. I may not have all answers, especially about promos that have been issued in the last 7 years (I don't collect the newer ones) but if you don't ask, we'll never know.

I actually have a question about a promo I have not been able to find. Granted, I only look for it from time to time, but have never seen it.
This want list was put together back in the late 1990's, so I might have my information wrong. I've whittled it down my wants to 3 cards. I recently started looking for the promo again. STAR WARS FINEST (1996) Album Card Hildebrandt Promo Matrix Redemption card The other two cards always have ridiculous asking prices. Is there an Hildebrandt promo? |

Probably why I can't find it, lol. Jeff Allender's site doesn't list it either, but I have found his checklists to be 99% accurate. Think I will remove that card from my wants unless someone else seeing this has seen one. Thanks! |

My question is what to do with bulk promos?
It's finally time to thin out my collection and I've accumulated a lot of promos from Non-Sport Update Magazine, etc. -- I assume 90% of them are "common" and not worth listing individually. Do buyers on eBay want small lots of similar cards (all Star Wars, all Rittenhouse, etc). -- Or just one giant lot of 245 promo cards? Should I just expect $0.50 each on average? All help appreciated. Thanks! |

Great question! If you've already decided that you will not sell them individually, then one huge lot as a pure 7 day auction ending on a Sunday before noon and only including the NSU magazine insert cards is the way to go. Some of the NSU magazine cards are scarce(Outlander|Game of Thrones are examples). So, you might get some bidders competing. Your description is crucial, and you should take the time to list the title, card number and year of issue of EACH card in your listing. Then sell the rest in a small lot. Yet, I don't think you should expect more than fifty cents a card as you aptly stated when selling wholesale. I wish you much success. |

Hi promoking, do you know much about the S&G 1995 Fleer Ultra X-men Sinister observations promos? Just saw this interesting listing of a near complete set pop up on ebay (not my listing)...
https://ebay.com/itm/275580151824 Seller is asking the moon in my opinion, not very realistic, but still these have to be among the rarer Marvel promos. Do you know the connection between this S&G glass company and these cards? Did they invent the chromium thing?

I took a stab at reading it: "Sign and Glassworks, the producers of Chromium technology has taken Promotional Chase Cards to new heights, to a level never seen before. Travel with us on a journey that card collectors will never forget. Experience the impact of multi-color ________, dimension and texture that only S&G can deliver. PRESENTING... You have better eyes than me, nice thanks! I’d say that agrees with what promoking was guessing above. Pretty neat

(waves hi) Thank you for being on the PiP Podcast, Promoking! Thanks to you I might have a new "habit", lol... I've just acquired a Starlog promo card, and one Urshurak Hildebrant promo.

Thank you for having me on the show. I enjoyed it immensely. Is the Starlog a hologram card? A word of caution: promo card hunting has been known to be habit forming!

Yes it is a hologram... I was a HUGE fan of Starlog magazine when I was very young. I had the whole entire collection for the longest time, but lost many of them in a flood sadly. Still have a few though.
And yes that habit is forming for sure, lol....

Are the Nelsonic 90’s X-men cards a full set? Did they come just one card per watch or was it a pack?
Newer question: Have any Stan Lee autos from the Hanes underwear Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 promo ever been found? Can someone post a pic? |

Those Nelsonic cards are a real bear to find. Nelsonic was the name of an electronics manufacturing and development company that operated from Long Island City, Queens NY in the early 1980s and throughout the 1990s. They have since been bought out. It is still a subsidiary of M.Z. Berger. In 1992, Nelsonic made a series of X-men watches and the cards were supposed to be included with the watches when purchased. I don't believe there were many included. About 20 years ago, there was a rumor circulating that 4,000 individual cards had been found at a flea market. It was around that time that I found the 40+ cards in my collection. So, I own about half the set. I don't know anyone who has an entire set so I can't tell you for sure that all 90 cards were stamped Nelsonic. It's one of the great marvel cards mysteries that has yet to be elucidated. I was not aware that any of the Hanes cards had been officially signed by the man himself. If Lee did, I haven't seen them. Last edited by promoking; 12-20-2022 at 11:16 AM. |
