Hello,
New Member here! I collected cards as a kid (mostly basketball), but outgrew it when I entered high school. Like many I liked Jordan, Penny, Kevin Garnett, Shaq, Kobe, Bird etc... Frank Thomas was my favorite baseball player. The Philadelphia Flyers were my favorite hockey team, but mostly because they are who I used on NHL 95 for the Sega. I wasn't really into football at the time, but now it's probably my favorite sport. I watch every Patriots game. Flash forward to the pandemic and I heard about cards blowing up. One night I started looking through my old stuff to see what I had for Kobe and Allen Iverson cards. The intention was to sell some stuff. Next thing you know I'm back into the hobby. I made all the classic mistakes. I overpaid for some Kobe stuff. I bought some draft cards (not even silver prizms). I sent in a Lamelo Ball redemption card I pulled (still waiting... 2 years now). I bought a Brady Bowman Chrome right after the Super Bowl. I made several trips to Walmart trying to find product. Once I even waited in a Covid line outside the store thinking it was people lined up for sports cards. I probably spent 3-4k more than I needed to making mistakes, but I understand the hobby a lot better now. I've decided to focus most of my money on my favorite players (Tom Brady, Gronk and eventually some Larry Bird). Maybe twice a year I'll buy a Mega box just for fun. I also have a few non star players that I PC for fun. This is some of my Brady stuff. Eventually I want to collect every rookie card, but I took a step back to focus on some early year refractors. I read through some old threads and its hard to believe I could have bought a contender for 2-3k 5 years ago. ![]() ![]() ![]() Then here is my nice Gronk stuff. Gronk didn't get a Championship Ticket card like Brady. He has two Rookie Ticket cards (one in blue jersey, one in white jersey) that are both autographed and have a print run of 499. Then he has the two Playoff ticket cards that are each numbered to 99. One of mine is his jersey number.. 87/99. I want to get it graded, but would love to somehow get it Autographed first. ![]() My favorite basketball team is the Celtics. Payton Pritchard, Marcus Smart and Rob Williams are my favorite players on the team. I like collecting Pritchard as his stuff is cheap. ![]() I live in Northern Vermont so UVM is really the closest thing we have to a sports team. I've been to some basketball games (and some hockey). I watched Anthony Lamb play in college and was impressed. I also bought ESPN+ for the first time ever so I could watch some of his games in the G League. Now he has a two way contract with the Warriors and is playing beside Steph Curry lol. Who would have thought. ![]() Maybe he won't pan out, but I don't regret scooping up a lot of his cards back when they were a few dollars each. He's the first UVM player to play in the NBA. Taylor Coppenwrath was also a local UVM star. Him and TJ Sorrentine gave UVM their only NCAA tournament win against Syracuse a long time ago. I still get chills watching the shot TJ made to seal the game at the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbFNFHsNo3w Also I have a few Jairus Lyles cards. UMBC beat my UVM with a buzzer beater by Jairus to go to the NCAA tournament. Then they became the first 16 seed to beat a 1 seed (Virginia). I remember watching the game live. It's the best college game I've ever watched. I believe Jairus plays overseas now, but he did spend some time in the G league. So that's it. I've been active on various car forums for years. Hopefully I'll find the same enjoyment here. - Charlie |
