I think Auston plays his whole career in Toronto and retires as the greatest Toronto Maple Leaf in franchise history.

Nope.

He's gone as soon as he can.

Leaf fans are delusional thinking he's staying. He wants no part of the unrealistic Toronto scene long-term.

He's going to LA, Anaheim, Las Vegas, or San Jose.

Arizona is a no-go. Matthews wants to play in the good 'ole USA. Period.

He literally just said he loves playing for the Leafs and considers Toronto his home.

What do you got that says otherwise?

What else is he going to say?

"I want out"?

Come back to reality now.

He said he considers Toronto his home now and is willing to sign long-term on the next contract. However, that doesn't really mean anything. A player can still demand a trade at any time and the team will have no choice but to comply.

I think he should GTFO of Toronto while he is still in his prime though. The Maple Leafs are the worst hockey franchise on the planet. He is just wasting his time here.

When has a hockey player said anything but that?
He loves playing for the Leafs until he doesn't anymore.

Why anyone would voluntarily go work in California is beyond intelligent comprehension. Also, Arizona is in the "good ole USA". It's one of the 50 states in America, founded in 1912

He will be the highest paid player in NHL history, whether in Toronto or elsewhere. I think he comes as close to a max contract as anyone in the modern era. McDavid and MacKinnon are only getting paid around 75% of what a true max contract would be, which is pretty funny when you think about some of the random guys who are getting max deals in the NBA.

My prediction: 8 years x 15 million to stay in Toronto. Whether that’s a good move for Toronto or not is unclear, but that’s what it’s going to take.

Who wouldn't say they love them team and fans they play for especially as the Captain of the ship? On the same token, what team wouldn't want to start talking long term a few years before FA to lock in a special player? Ultimately, money is going to talk and he should sign the most expensive contract in history. Personally, I believe it'll come down to brand and endorsements. Where will Auston make the most money? Will it be Toronto or another big city?

He’s going to SoCal for about $14 mill per season, if not more. Not a chance in the world he goes to Phoenix and a very low chance he stays in Toronto.

Unless he's going into the witness protection program he's not heading to Phoenix. With a hard cap it's not like he can land into a Judge type situation.

With a building frustration over not doing anything in the playoffs I could see him demanding a trade similar to Eichel though.

Using Johnny Hockey or Matthew Tkachuk as examples of how Auston will leave the Maple Leafs as an UFA…the Calgary Flames and the Toronto Maple Leafs are not even in the same stratosphere.

Auston Matthews likely already knows he’s getting a bronze statue on Legend’s Row.

Correct.
The Flames at least get out of the first round.
And what did MT do that was so bad? About a full year ahead of him becoming a UFA he told his boss AND the public he wasn't going to re-sign so he wouldn't leave them high and dry? That's more than most guys would ever do.

Spoiler Alert:

Toronto is not the center of the universe.

He's going somewhere South with sunshine year round. He doesn't even spend summers in Toronto so obviously it isn't his "home". If they don't make a playoff push this year I think he's gone 100%.

Of course he is

Only unrealistic and unhinged Leaf fans would think any different

There's certainly a chance he leaves, but the people acting like it's a foregone conclusion are delusional. He's on track to be the greatest player of all-time for one the world's most historic sports teams. That's not something you pass up just to go enjoy warmer weather.

Players of his caliber in general don't switch teams often in the NHL.

The one thing I'd personally say with 100% certainty is that he's not going to play for the Coyotes. Literally no chance. What's up with everyone thinking every player has to go play for their hometown team?
