I bought in to some of the hype. Mainly because he’s in the best position to succeed this year vs. the other 2021 QBs picked. Just a few cards nothing pricey. But the 49ers gave up some good picks to move up to #3. Everyone knew he was a project so it was good he sat his first year. But now he’s the guy. What says you?
Now someone do this for Zach the MILF destroyer.

As a Niners fan, he looks the part...we shall see this season.

I mean he is more likely to bust than succeed. Even though he walked into the best situation of any of the first round QBs in 2021. Much like Mahomes he was drafted to a playoff team that traded up to get him, not a bottom dwelling franchise and so he is the only talented player on said team (IE Jags/Jets, probably bears too if being honest)
Saying this as an NDSU alumn and live very close to Marshall MN(where he is from), he out performed his expectations, but the sample size is SO small. He really played like 13 college games? Over half of those were againsts FCS teams that got blown out by NDSU and he was done trying after the first half. When he came to NDSU he was 160 dripping wet, and has put on some muscle, but not enough to be taking consistent hits in the NFL from grown ass men. He has never thrown the ball a ton at any level of football, and that should scare anyone. Does he have a good stage to succeed? Yes. Does he have the potential to do so? Yes. If I had to bet my house on will he? No, because the odds just favor bust whether injuries or figuring out how to keep him in the pocket and make him pass. His ceiling is to be the next Dak at best IMO. I would love to see him become the next Mahomes, but I just don't see it at all, the raw talent just isn't there and the red flags are too hard to ignore. Could be wrong though, should be a fun season if he stays healthy though, I think the 49ers are my pick for the west (sorry rams). Babbling thoughts, but hey what are internet forums for TLDR: Yes overrated, probably will bust. |

Barring injury I think there are two options.
1 - he has a similar season to year 2 as Josh Allen. Ups and downs throughout the season but makes playoffs. Gets better with experience. Year 3 is a big improvement. Card prices drop throughout the year. 2- has an amazing season and the Niners go deep in playoffs. Card prices go up. Will get a ton of media coverage if he explodes. Similar to how Mahomes was all the talk his first year starting. I don’t see him falling on his face, period. This team is stacked, as is the coaching staff and front office. He has loads of talent. |

I tend to think Trey will have the type of season where he progressively gets better and hopefully peaks around the playoffs.
The big question in my mind is whether Shanahan will continue his bone-headed approach of utilizing Trey as a "running back". Last year he had several designed run plays for Trey which he used almost as a first option for Trey when he was sent in to play. Shanahan has to realize this is a terrible misuse of his young QB. Allow Trey to do what nearly all the great mobile QB's have done in the past and run only when the play breaks down or he see's a wide open field.

Young QBs can always bust. No such thing as a situation too good that a young QB can't fail. It is extremely easy to isolate the QB's contribution and in some ways being surrounded by great teammates ramps up the pressure on him. Theres no one else to blame if he struggles. 2 bad games and fans will be clamoring for Jimmy.
Way too many guys bought in thinking he just has to be decent to good and the team around him will do the rest. Just he solid, let the team get to 12 wins and all these would be flippers make bank. Not so. He will have to be a legitimate MVP contender for his prices to pop this season. Theres just way too many people trying to flip. Just being a better game manager will not cut it. |

A bit too early to tell....ask again at the end of the season....
But I'd be worried about how raw (and potentially bad) the interior of the offensive line is......the 49ers lost two key starters (Mack & Tomlinson) and did not replace them. Last edited by mfw13; 08-25-2022 at 09:35 PM. |

That's definitely one of my biggest concerns right now as well as what seems like the yearly concern about the defensive backfield.

hes pretty much in trouble til something clicks , maybe by 6th week he may have a groove of sorts, if he lasts that long. I think the defense can keep games close enough, so he can learn on the fly and not be under pressure to make bad decisions.

It’s going to be a trying season for 49ers fans.
The only positive was Wilson traded out of the division |

2 tough matchups in the first 6 weeks. Atl, Sea, Chi and Car should be easy wins
But then SF has the Chiefs, Rams, Chargers, Cardinals, Saints, Dolphins & Bucs all in a row. That is where the real test begins Truth be told, I hope he does not become a bust being a Niners fan. But I did want the Niners to take Mac Jones at #3. That being said, hope Lance does well

How is he rated? Everything I've seen is that he'll likely struggle and not be a star for a few years, if ever.

Here's the thing...people are expecting Mahomes. That he got to sit and will light it up immediately. IMO, if he succeeds, it's going to be more like Josh Allen's path. He has serious work to do as a passer.

He will have to use his legs a lot to be successful this year is my guess.

The kid is obviously super athletic and talented. He is also in a great system with San Francisco with weapons all around him and solid coaching. He is arguably in a better position than Mac Jones. He will likely have a fine season and perhaps make the playoffs, but struggle to go deep into playoffs. Tons of potential upside career wise
But, everyone has already priced him to be the next great quarterback. I mostly see downside from a card pricing perspective. Maybe not in the immediate term, as the hype machine will keep his pricing solid for much of the season until the flippers are able to dump their inventory. Buyer beware at current prices… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
