Default Patrick Corbin and the Race to 20 Losses

(1) The Nationals are terrible.

(2) Patrick Corbin is currently 4-16.

(3) Because of #1, Corbin will probably keep starting for the rest of the season. (I mean, why not, he's making $23M this year anyway.) Thus, Corbin likely has 8 or 9 more starts remaining this season.

At current pace, Corbin is projected to lose 21 or 22 games. Will Patrick Corbin win the race to 20 losses?

(FYI, there has only been one 20-game loser in the last 40 years, and you'd have to be either a total nerd or a Tigers fan to know who it is without looking. Today's post is in honor of his 45th birthday!)

he also has a chance at the extremely elusive 7+ ERA club. Its only been done 3 times and once since 1930 (assuming min innings)

most recently Jose Lima made a good run but fell just short at 6.99

Lol, terrific. I hated Corbin had a serviceable start yesterday to bring him all the way down to 6.96.

Brian Kingman did indeed lose 20 games for the Oakland A's in 1980 ... but he was not the most recent.

Niekro lost 20 in 1979... and had a WINNING RECORD

And had a 3.39 ERA... talk about a crap team!

Funny. I was just about to mention Phil Niekro as well the moment that I saw this thread. Dude lead the league in losses every year from 1977 - 1980 accumulating a staggering 78 total losses in just those four years alone. And yet through it all, still managed to win over 300 games and ultimately making the Hall. Unbelievable career.

Ive been Calling Corbin and Adon Mike M***** pretty much all season. Have a bet with a buddy one of them would hit 20 loses.

Feeling pretty confident

1 - while I am a total nerd, I know the answer because I am a Cardinals fan, and his name still sends shivers down my spine.

2 - Corbin losing 20 would be fascinating. This is one of those modern baseball things teams don't let happen because they don't want a guy to be embarrassed. Which means, maybe, perhaps, if the Nationals are paying him a gajillion dollars a year and he keeps showing up for work - they DO want him to be embarrassed?

I mentioned this in other threads, but Niekro led the league in bWAR (not fWAR) is a season when he lost 20 games. Granted - he also won 20 and led the league in IP, CG, etc

What would his score be in your Cy Young predictor? Does it go into negative numbers?

I mean, if my predictor were worth a crap it would give Corbin a negative score

As it stands, German Marquez is second-worst in the NL with about 50 points, and Corbin has 32 points.

Last night the Nats set a MLB record for not having a starter win a game in 40 consecutive starts.

I certainly remember the 27 game losing streak - seemed impossible at the time and quite frankly still does. Pretty cool clip of the streak being snapped, was awesome to see the teammate and fan support.

Side note, I had no idea Young died a few years back of a brain tumor. Always sad to hear someone go so young, no pun intended. RIP AY

He helped them win their Championship so there is that. Now it's just waiting out the expiration of the contract.
