Default How in the world do football wax prices retain value

I’ve seen big drops in baseball and basketball wax prices, potentially reflecting a reduced demand in breaks, but somehow football wax prices defy gravity and stay strong throughout the offseason.

Are football breaks the most popular out of all the sports?

Football wax seems to have some of the lower price ceilings compared to basketball, but definitely retains the highest floor out of all the sports.

Any other explanations?

Possibly due to the higher end hits are bigger than the other sports (i.e QBs).

Football has the biggest team fan base by far. And more than any other sport, fans just want their team. That's why a Packer fan would much prefer a 25 box break over buying a box. Also believe, as shown, they would pay a premium.

Because quarterbacks take a few years to prosper. Many top players are not hot right away therefore many NFL players take a few years before their value peaks.

still boggles my mind that people pay 1000 for a box of optic . the hype for this rookie class is pretty much over . who can afford this ? i remember paying less than a hundred bucks for boxes of the andrew luck / griffin year .

That’s football. It’s become buy a box and store it.

Perhaps football collectors are worse at math than those who collect other sports? I've been working on a project picking up some 90s-00s junk wax, it's amazing that people will pay more for a box than any card is worth that could be pulled from said box. With the modern stuff it seems people are treating it like expensive lotto tickets with similar odds of hitting big, a recipe for failure.

I'm surprised at this point no one here has mentioned price manipulation/pumping.

Just look at the box break section: compared to years past, there are hardly any breaks posted. People just don't break en masse on here like they used to.

If the rookie class lays an egg this year, I think we might finally see a drop in prices in football wax. The breakers can only prop up prices for so long.

I really hope I'm right.

100% agree with this and one of the reasons (besides overproduction) that I pretty much stopped buying unopened wax in 2020.

This is the only response that separates football from all the other sports.

There is hopium and price manipulation in all sports, but football seems to have the most loyal team fan base and that’s why breaks make the most sense in football.

Hence, the price floor for football wax stays where it’s at - people are willing to pay $20 for any random team break which essentially gives any football product a $600 floor more or less.

Breakers run the football hobby more than any sport - thank you for pointing that out!

FB doesn’t have the top heavy high profile hits in bk (Lebron) or baseball ( superfractor chrome autos), but represent the best value for team collectors.

Either that or FB guys really are just dumb at math, lol!

If you are buying a box of Optic for $1K at release, and sitting on it for a while. I don't think you will be on the right end of winning.

Imagine paying 1k for that box of optic. Then sitting on it for 5 years until a QBrc has a run. Then you pull points and they are expired since panini is gone.

Well. This year's draft. Top 5 picks were defense, 3 of the next four OLineman. Only 1 QB who was at 20. No RBs. 6 WRs though. One of them could be this year's Jamaar Chase I guess. Typically WRs aren't enough to keep the pump going.

I have said this before and it goes with the off season salary bonanza. Smart teams won't pay 20 million plus on WRs. With the spread offenses now in college, there will be a fresh supply of 10-15 every year in the top few rounds.

We could always be wrong and someone comes out of no where to light this class on fire, but I don't see it.

I really hope this class just falls flat on it's face and prices drop like a rock.

I’ll buy NFL wax at $2.99/pack but not more than that

If you hold a box for 5 years I’d imagine you are a selling it as it’s gone up in price. Why would you hold for that long and open it?

Actually, with such a weak class in 2022, I could see the hype for the 2021 class last into next year!
