I mean their stadium is an eyesore and they haven’t won a World Series since 1989.

This went up today on Fangraphs:

Very, we traded away our best player who went on to win championships so that we could win 20 games in a row one time. Remember? Remember.. like please remember because I am worthless, but I want people to think that I accomplished something.

I’d challenge the person who actually determines the base rating of all things rated.

Are you talking about the philosophy or the Michael Lewis story about the philosophy (book/movie)?
Either way, I don’t know what the stadium has to do with it. And I’m no defender of the Coliseum—as someone who’s worked both there and at McCovey Cove, I can attest that the A’s play in a junkyard. Although, if anything, the quality of the stadium could be perceived as a symbol of the franchise’s (relative) economic plight that led it to pursue alternative means of competitive advantage. And thus, the so-call moneyball philosophy was borne. Regardless of whether the original iteration of the philosophy is netting results on the field, it challenged how MLB talent front offices sought talent constructed rosters. So, is it overrated? I don’t know if that’s appropriate question. It has certainly proven impactful. Unless you’re talking about the boom. Or the movie. In which case, that’s a personal taste. I enjoyed both. And I’d say the story was certain worthy being explored. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

I enjoyed the movie, but the story obviously and intentionally left out really key pieces of that team, specifically Eric Chavez, Miguel Tejada, and the A's rotation. The movie seemed to imply that David Justice and Scott Hatteberg led the team.

I'm of the probably stupid opinion that nobody would've considered it a great success without the pitching horses they were lucky to have.

Moneyball deserves more respect than it gets.

Well I don't see how the park being garbage is relevant, but they are on of the winningest franchises since the turn of the century.
Not much postseason success, but the playoffs are a crapshoot for the most part. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

Overrated. It was a flawed movie given the fact that the A's pitching was the biggest reason for their success and it wasn't even mentioned. But I made it to the end. That usually counts for something.

Good cast. Phillip Seymour Hoffman making Art Howe a douche, Ray Donovan's murderous daughter too. I also liked the bigger minor league guy who hit the HR at the end, was a true story.

Strange timing as I watched this on a flight yesterday, it was free. Jonah Hill- Superbad, Moneyball And Wolf of Wall Street a pretty impressive early career character acting trifecta . Dude is talented.

Teams that have guys who redefine how baseball players are valued yet don’t win anything, are never overrated.

The general concept of moneyball is to find value where others don't see it. And if my memory serves correctly (been over ten years since I read it) to use statistical advantages that average out over the course of a season to help you win games.
And if you take this BB quote into account "My 'expletive' doesn't work on in the play-offs. My job is getting us to the play-offs. What happens after that is 'expletive' luck." Then I'd say it's not overrated. It's been very successful in giving the A's a chance. Sadly, they haven't been able to get it done in the playoffs. The playoffs are compressed. Those statistical advantages that average out over 162 don't always bounce the right way in a short series.

Billy Beane's legacy: 18 seasons as GM, 1 (ONE) postseason series win, 0 (ZERO) World Series championships. Name one other GM who has had that level of utter failure for that length of time, and still has that job. I'll wait . . .
But please, tell me all about "doing more with less", "if only he had money to spend", and all other fanboy-related BS. He had a chance to go to Boston years ago, but was scared to leave his little sewage-flooded kingdom and go somewhere that his prolonged failure would not be tolerated. Can't wait until Chokeland moves, and that sh!thole of a stadium is imploded. |
