Default White Whale...The Admiral edition

i had to share this with you all. got this in the mail this week.

David Robinson 1989 Hoops PSA 10 rookie card!

i became a Spurs fan because one of my friends was a huge fan back in the day, and David Robinson was everything to the city of San Antonio and the Spurs franchise.

i love the dude. i used to mimic his shots (even though i'm a righty), his free throws, and i even bought a Spurs hat that had his autograph embroidered on it, and i lost it within a few hours, idk what happened to that cap.

i was hearbroken when he lost in the WCF to Houston, and it sucked to see him miss most of the season with a back injury and then see all these teams just tearing us to shreds without our big guy there (except Houston, i remember Dominique went off against them in Houston, oh sweet revenge)...but then of course we landed Duncan the following year, and a few years after that, Robinson was a champ. it was awesome.

but anyway, long story short, just wanted to share my white whale!

Real test is...did you have your socks rolled???

Great pickup That card has always been a must-have imho. His rookie stat line remains insane lol and he still has been just a great ambassador for the game.

Why is this a "white whale"?
There are tons of these (80 on ebay right now) and they're cheap.
Why start a thread about it?

Why post on a thread with such BS... just move on and let him share a card he was excited to land, regardless of what you think.... K?

Nostalgic for a lot of us... this was definitely a card to have back then.

Thx for sharing this, OP.

You’re a douche and $375 isn’t cheap to a lot of people

That’s all

There's 11 of them on eBay.

This one, card #138, has about a 9% gem rate, out of 8400 copies.

Don't get this card confused with number 310, which has a 31% gem rate, out of 7000 copies.

This, indeed, qualifies as a white whale.

He’s clearly looking at raw cards (my guess) as if we don’t all know those are common

Congratulations OP on your beautiful RC addition, and thank you very much for sharing your story! I'm an avid collector of David Robinson cards myself, as he is my favorite all-time basketball player. It's easy to tell that you were following along for both the joys and pains of his great career.

Thanks for posting OP - I got to see a graded copy of an iconic card that I coveted as a kid and add someone to blocked list in one swoop. Win/Win

People not alive then don't understand how huge this card was in 1989. I think it was even more popular than MJ's 86 Fleer. Hard to believe now, but his 86 Fleer wasn't really considered his "Rookie" card and Star was the real RC.

Nice job OP!!!!!!!!!!!

I can even count how many boxes I ripped of this trying to pull that card. I didn't care about the Jordan at all.

What's funny is that I already had McGee blocked. Now I remember why. What a moronic post.

Grats OP. Obviously the Admiral is the real GOAT. But definitely the best human on the planet also.

Nice, this is a huge card for a Spurs fan. Always wanted a PSA 10 but never got around to getting one since I went with BGS. Might still end up picking up a PSA for the pc.

Can't stand jerk posts like this. He's excited about a card he's been wanting for a while now. Is that not allowed on a BASKETBALL CARD FORUM. Also you can also just skip it. Don't understand what you get out of crapping on someone's card. Great card OP...don't let jerks like this get to ya

Awesome stuff. I know the feeling when you finally get that card you’ve wanted for decades. Congrats.

Back in the day the OG version of NBA Hoops came in the see through cellophane wrapper with a precise ordering of players for every pack. You could check out the top player and be able to pop an Admiral if you knew the players who would always appear before him in the progression. Same with any other card, Jordan, other rookies, whatever

At age 13 I copped many many Admirals at the corner liquor store this way

50 cent packs

Them were the days…

Congrats OP!!!
