Default Mike Trout PSA 10 “Vertical”

Back in 2016, as David Ortiz was winding down his career, I went onto COMC and tried to find all his raw base cards (which I did for about $20…)

A few years later (after I purchased a 2011 PSA 10 for $300 before the explosion) thought it’d be cool to do the same for Mike Trout. I purchased 1 of each of the 2012 - 2018 Topps and during the slab boom, thought it’d be even cooler to do a PSA 10 Vertical of all his base cards and in early 2021 sent them all in along with other bulk orders.

Well, a year later, I just got them back. Even though the consecutive serial numbers are cool, I have three 9’s that I’ll need to “upgrade.” Not too bad considering I bought one each of these raw online and sent them in anyhow.

Anyway, here’s the Trout Vertical as it sits now.

I’m also working from these for Acuna, Soto, Tatis, Vlad, LouBob and Wander. Certainly going to be a lot harder until PSA goes back to bulk (if/when)

Anyone else ever try to put these together?

Very cool! I'm currently putting a Trout PSA 10 "vertical" together myself.

Just missing two more years! Will post mine when complete.

Nice job!

Looks good, that is a good idea.
At least the most expensive one is a 10.
Are you going to by some more raw cards and try to get a 10 yourself or are you going to buy the one you need in a 10 already.

Will definitely be buying 10’s and selling these 9’s.

With PSA lotteries still going at $50 per card, it doesn’t make sense to submit anything right now.

I like things like this. I collect runs of various players in various sets like Pujols, Ichiro, Jeter, and Trout in Heritage, Topps Chrome, Bowman, and Transcendent (why oh why did they not have an Update set for Heritage in 2001?). Just little projects to keep track of with guys who aren't my primary focus and I don't want to build whole sets. I don't collect basketball or slabs but I had been thinking of starting a run of PSA 10 Topps Finest Kobes. All his cards look sweet.

Is a "vertical" getting the card from each year of a player? I've never heard the term but that's what I'm getting. If so, that's what I do with my collections. Just finished the basic Pete Rose run from 1963-1989 Topps. Now Just need to upgrade some to better conditions as I get the chance. I'm currently also working on Bench, Morgan, and Perez.

My 2011 Trout is a BGS 9.5 that I bought back in the day for $150. The rest of his run are all PSA Fine 9s that I didn't pay more than $25 per slab.

Sorry. Yeah. I’m in the wine industry, it’s a wine term.

A “vertical” is one bottle per year from a specific winery, whereas,

A “horizontal” is one bottle from many producers from a specific year.

Would love to see a pic of the Pete Rose run!

I’m not a hoops collector either, but I bet the Kobe’s would look pretty slick together…

While this is true, he uses the term vertical the way the wine industry uses it

I’ve got a Votto “vertical,” (thanks for teaching me a new term) in progress. I’m still missing 2020 and 2021 though.

Ok. I'm trying to figure out how to attach photos from my phone. It only lets me attach 6, so I tried to collage them together. Hope this works.

I tried to set up the collection using the 1986 cards as inspiration. But I do also include in my Pete Rose "vertical" the 1984 Topps Update as it's the only Topps card of him in his Expos uniform. And I also end my collection with the 1990 Topps Bart Giamatti card as it was the official end to Rose's career. lol

What I learned, a “Vertical” = PSA Basic Topps Set

Default Mike Trout PSA 10 “Vertical”

Here’s an update…finally found a 2012 for a reasonable price. 2014 and 2020 were picked up pretty cheap.

I imagine 2021 and beyond are gonna have to be self-subbed/expensive as the grading game is evolving…

I bought a raw 2012 chrome and got an SGC 10, which is currently a pop 3 out of 88. I don't think it would ever sell for what it probably should but it's easily my rarest 10.

Love it! I’ve got a Scherzer Topps Black vertical going - https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1232465

It’s all ungraded other than the 2008. Seeing yours has me thinking about getting it slabbed.

That is definitely one to have the key cards out of the way on. I currently am going for an SGC vertical of Frank Robinson and having the cards from the 50s out of the way makes the rest pretty easy to complete.

Fantastic Trout vertical.

I'm now working on a vertical of verticals. I'm doing a vertical of all hall of famers that played as Reds during the Topps era. Starting with Frank Robinson and ending currently with Griffey (possibly Rolen soon and maybe Votto when he retires will get me to current years). The neat thing is that in doing this, I cover every single year of Topps cards from 1957 through 2010 (and up through present day if you count Votto) without missing a single year. I've found it to be a neat way to chronicle the Topps sets through the years in my collection.

p.s. I am not counting Lee Smith even though he played part of a season with the Reds at the end of his career. So I currently am working on Robinson, Morgan, Perez, Seaver, Bench, Larkin, Griffey, and Votto*.
