Default Positional Investment Ranking: What Say You?

The general opinion is that pitchers are not sound investments (suspend the argument if any cards are sound investments).

While this is generally true, there are many exceptions, and I don’t think they are close to last if you count all positions.

Here’s my subjective ranking from best to worst.

1. Outfielders
2. 1st Base
3. Shortstop
4. 3rd Base
5. Starting Pitchers
6. Designated Hitters
7. Catchers
8. 2nd Base
9. Closers
10. Relievers (non-closers)

Any vigorous disagreement?

I like bat first prospects
Then how old they are
Vs price at the time
Don’t really care what market thinks at the time
On my guys I like
Position doesn’t matter to me
If a shortstop hits 35-40 homers
Or a dh hits same amount
Or a pitcher named Ohtani grins
The bat will always play!
Just my opinion
I do things bass ackwards apparently lol

i would put pitchers, closers, and relievers at the very bottom.

outfielders seem to be the trend, i'd agree with that, i mean look at the top players right now (Soto, Acuna, Trout, Harper), followed by i would say SS, then 3rd and 1st. that would be my rankings.

Further proof that the flipping investing crowd is distorting player popularity and that baseball card good does not equal baseball good.

Flippers are not always the evil-doers that are so powerful, they can affect which positions are the most popular to the collecting community— but I still enjoy how you blame them for everything that’s wrong - like inflaton!

More money is probably lost on starting pitchers than anyone else. The injuries they can be career ending. Before the pandemic, there weren't very many catchers that came out of the minors at high prices. 2B should definitely moved ahead. DH's are usually players that are stuck behind someone on the depth chart. Otherwise, who in the minors really comes up as a "DH", so no money lost there. Designated closers are probably cheap to begin with. The key is picking them up when they are cheap. Otherwise, they are failed starters so you already lost anyway.

Starting pitchers would be dead last on my list. They mean less and less in today's game.

I agree that OF/SS/3B/1B are the kings of the market for baseball.

Kinda feels like there is a wave of strong catchers coming and there could be solid value on guys like Rutschman/Soderstrom/Davis/etc should they pan out.

It’s interesting how in football the guy throwing the ball is the most valuable in cards. But in baseball, no one wants the guy throwing the ball.

Pains me to admit this, but it’s true. Apart from just a handful of guys (Kershaw, deGrom, Scherzer), even elite active starters get no hobby love.

I still think…in Ohtani’s case…he’s a “40 HR guy who can also pitch” more than a “9 win pitcher who can also hit.”

For me
1. OF
2. SS
3. 1B
4. 3B
Big Gap
5. SP
6. 2B
7. C
8. DH
9. Closer
10. Middle relief (the only true no value one)

I get that it's hard to speculate on starters, but they do alright. Scherzer, Kershaw, Buehler, Fried, and Ian Anderson all have decent value here and there and that's just guys from the NLCS.

Definitely some truth to that since you can pick up really nice Verlander, Scherzer, Kershaw auto rookie parallels for under $500. I think it's just a phase...these cards will only go up in value over the long haul. These guys will go into the Hall and go down as the best pitchers of their generation. The pitching great keep their value.....My Bob Gibson, Seaver, Carlton, Ryan, Koufax, Drysdale, Feller, Perry rookies are all doing just fine in terms of value

Of course, I was kidding. Pitchers annually are my best resale cards by percentage easily. If you don’t have the wallet or stomach to invest in the game’s top young players(and I don’t) then there are always 2-5 pitchers that jump from common to semi-somethin every year. That jump is generally 4-10x You ain’t gonna buy a boat with the returns but boxes of Huggies or name brand Mac n cheese is seemingly always within reach.

1. CF, position played by the two hobby GOATs (and if you're delusional enough to call Tuna Fish Sandwich a hobby GOAT then I guess it makes three, but you're wrong).
2. SP, but it's feast of famine. Many misses here, but many grand slams.

It's a valid investment strategy to buy ONLY cards of CFs. When Hobby GOAT III comes along chances are he'll play CF.
