Talking Your investing/collecting strategy?

As we have discussed the hobby has obviously changed
Back in my day early 90s
We would hit a store buy a box of wax and rip it
And store the cards LOL
These days players who can’t shave regularly yet are worth thousands
Based off of potential, hype ,draft status ect ect ect
For some of us coming back
We missed the boat on trout tatis acuna Guerrero
And more
So the question is ?
How do y’all do it?
Participating in the hobby these days if it’s an investment?
Wax? Singles? Sets? Autos?
Seems like 100 different ways to go ?
I ain’t selling anything and I ain’t a former member
Just curious.
Not looking for any ideas on sleeper pics
Just on strategies LOL
Either way thanks for reading thread.

I primarily collect cards which I find visually appealing, don't care a whit about their future value, and occasionally cull my collection by selling 20-25 cards per year.

It’s refreshing to know people still collect based of of card appeal!

The smell of cards really gets my little weenie pointing straight to the sky, really nostalgic for me.

Same / similar. Find a set / design I like. Look at the checklist for players I like. Hunt those cards.

The boat has sailed and now the only way to make money is by gambling. Maybe that prospect you like turns into the next Acuna, but 99% of them will just bust. Maybe you get a big hit in break, but you will probably lose. You could maybe grab vintage for a less risky investment, but everyone is doing that these days and even those cards could lose value in the future.

What am I doing right now? I am buying things I feel are great deals or things I just want to collect. I am trying to put the 1951 Topps Blue/Red sets together, but being patient on the prices I pay and building it raw. I am buying pre-1960 HOF in SGC slabs with great centering in lower grades. I am buying raw HOF cards on COMC for the fun of it. Bought nice raw copies of "second year" cards of Ozzie Smith, Rickey Henderson, Tony Gwynn, etc... for 50 cents to $2. I am just being very selective or buying cheap cards to keep in top loaders for a HOF base card set. I also throw away money on trying to become a Rik Smits super collector and own every card that was made of him. My wife opened up a package I ordered with a Rik Smits starting line-up sealed and asked if I was collecting dolls now as well.

Strategy:

ooo nice and shiny
Open Wallet
Empty Wallet
place card to the right
stare at cards
Place any cards to be protected in sleeve and holder
Place in Box
Stare at cards sometime down the road.
Collected

Repeat.

Second year cards will never be worth much money. It is built into card collection that rookie cards are the only things that are collectible. When cards hit all-time highs in 2021, people started paying big money for "second year" cards and they all crashed much harder than the rookie cards.

Right now, I think collecting raw cards worthy of grading down the line is the way to go. Buy Card Saver 1's, penny sleeves, and get great condition cards to send to PSA in 2023 when prices of grading is under $25. That is the best advice you will get here.

Make sure you're having fun with cards. If what you buy goes up in value and you make a buck, great.

You can have several years worth of prospect pre Debut cards but they aren’t”t
