Question Since Trout, has any Player had so much hype as Franco?

My collecting experience:

1985 - 2005 Sportscards
2006-2017 Comics
2018- Present Sportscards

So….. I missed Trouts debut, but was here since day 1 with Wander’s debut. My question is….. who was the biggest “can’t miss” in their Prospect/Rookie year? ~ any/all players from 2006-2017 ( the 12 years I was temporarily out of this Market ) ….. aside from Trout; maybe Harper?

Strasburg was the biggest hype I’ve ever seen, and I started collecting in 1987. Also, there was zero hype for Trout’s debut. Just ask anyone who sold his rookie card that first year.

Trout didn’t have hype at the same point Franco is. I probably gave away a quarter of a million dollars worth of Trout cards in 2011 because he wasn’t on the radar until later on. I remember hitting low numbered autos of his Finest RC and sold them for nothing. Strasburg on the other hand was crazier out of the gate. Kris Bryant as well.

BTW we are really talking 2nd year hype at this point, right???

I mean, a ton of 2nd year players have had this hype, or more

Soto, Acuna, Tatis, Judge, etc etc etc

The list is long…

I think Harper, Strasburg, and Bryant were all considered transcendent generational phenoms when they first laced em up. The dynamic is certainly a little different now with the onslaught of international talent beginning to maybe eclipse American born players overall in the high end talent pool. The ability to sign earlier in life and further along in baseball development is a huge factor.

I concur. Strasburg was something else.

Off the top of my head all probably had bigger hype going into their debuts but the hobby wasn’t as strong. Gordon was the last Topps craze I can remember like this.

" Mike trout, I can't remember if this dude's good. Numbered to 50, orange autograph. Mike trout, that name sounds familiar. Maybe I've seen him in other products."

And let’s be honest here… are we comparing Wander last year at this time??? I.e., at his call up? I don’t think his hype was outsized then. Certainly folks were excited, but I feel like it was no more than a dozen other players’ hype over the last 3-4 years.

Or do we mean now, as a 2nd year player after a 1st year where they put up a historic performance at a very young age? In which case we’d have folks like Acuna, who had tons of hype going into year two.

Is this your weird way of trying to say that S1 isn't an RC?

No… it means nothing more that what it is… Wander isn’t a rookie this year, so it feels most fair to compare Wander’s current hype to other players going into year 2. Nothing more.

Trying to compare him to players’ hype before they set foot in MLB, or had a chance to shine and show off skill, seems kind of inaccurate

When I think of ‘hype’, I think of guys who hadn’t made the bigs yet (or maybe had just a handful of ABs and haven’t exhausted their rookie status yet)?

Some good names have been mentioned already… what about Gregg Jefferies, Yasiel Puig, and Dice-K?
