Default Marvel Beginnings 2021

Looks like it's available for pre-order now. I was searching for images and this is all I could find:

The template looks a lot like the original. Wonder if the comic cut template is being reused too?

EDIT:

Each Box contains Two Rainbow Foil Parallels, Three Illustration Board Cards, and Three Flipped FX Cards!

Look for the Following CASE HITS:

- 1 Original Sketch Card
- 2 Comic Clippings
- 2 Rare Creator Autographs
- 2-3 First Appearance Variant Cards
- 4-5 Flipped FX #'d Light FX Cards

Yep looks a lot like the original Marvel Beginnings. This time with parallels etc.

A whopping 16 boxes per case. And just 1 sketch in a case = only 1 sketch in 16 boxes, quite rare. UD must figure the inserts/parallels can carry the set.

Curious what the flipped FX thing is. Are they doing away with the holograms from the original Marvel Beginnings I wonder.

I noticed something in the product description on one of the Blowout pre-order pages (both boxes and cases are out of stock at the moment):

Quote:
Search for:
Huge 180 Card Base Set:
- Look for Ultra-rare Purple Rainbow Reality #’d 1 of 1
- Hobby Exclusive #’d Blue Rainbow Cosmic Cube Parallel!
- Search for First Appearance Variants Cards- Rare, Super-Rare, Hyper-Rare!
Does the mention of a hobby exclusive mean there will be a retail release or is it general marketing/promotional jargon?

I think that just means it won’t be found in ePack. I doubt there will be a retail release.

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. I didn't even think about e-Pack.

I don't really like that card design, with the head shot on the front. I think they should have done a modern design on front and a classic design on the back.

It’s very similar to the template they used a decade ago for the first 3 Marvel Beginnings sets.

I like him too but he’s kind of a ripoff of Slimer.

Something seemed off, I just noticed the new cards are missing the vertical border down the side of the card. It could just be an incomplete mock up. Would be nice if they switched it up and did something similar to the humble beginnings cards:

I got on the pre-order list last year and just honestly forgot about this set until the payment came up last week, so I assumed the release was imminent. My pre-order prices were around $99 a box, so this is definitely not a high-end set. I'm guessing it is the new cheapish Annual-like set (since Annual seems to be adding in lower numbered cards thus elevating it to lower-mid tier).

I would consider it a mid-tier release as it has sketches, autos, buybacks, numbered cards, etc. The boxes from the original series back in the early 2010s go for 800-1000 a box so there is likely some demand for the product. Most presells now are in the 250-275 range so you got a great deal.

Saw a post on YouTube where it was discussed that there could be some multi-panel comic clippings in this set which would be a huge get if true.

Buybacks....I didnt see anything about them, but are they really doing buybacks of a set from like a decade go? Original marvel beginnings sets are basically in the modern era.

I do agree with it being a mid-tier release...which in Marvel today is still like 250 a box, sheesh. This product is a step up from Annual for me. Even the box art looks pretty cool.

2011-2012 Beginnings boxes are so expensive because they rare to find today. People hoping to buy these and save sealed until they reach $1k like the original beginnings boxes need to realize it's apples and oranges...people werent doing that as much with those boxes (hence scarce today), whereas more people probably saving sealed today. Also the original series had Stan Lee autos on the comic covers, plus the popular holograms.

Looks like there are several comic clippings--

1) regular cuts like we have seen many times before

2) Lineage booklets

3) Dual signature

4) Full splash page cuts--presumably redemptions

I'll admit, the small cuts in the booklets seems 'cheap', but then again, smaller windows means you can have a slightly better choice, I guess. And multiples. The perfect cut is rare since dialogue bubbles or cut-off people are usually prevalent. Personally I don't like booklets, but the Lineage do look cool. UD showed off the Surfer and a Spider-Man.

I assume the full splash pages will do well, but I'm a standard-size fan, so anything that large is a nightmare for storage. (Same reason I'm not into multi-panel sketches from Premier.)

Im not a huge fan of comic cuts, but if those lineage booklets feature the clippings from the character's most important books through time....it's a neat idea.

Perfect candidate for one of hardball34's holders....in fact probably this one (would have to measure)

For $250/box this is a hard pass.

Default Marvel Beginnings 2021

One thing striking me first is the cheapo-looking insert sets. This seems to be a trend for upper deck marvel outside the big sets like MM*. Saw a lot of them in FUA.

If you just take a card that looks like a base….put no foil on it, nothing fancy…I have a really hard time getting into that as an insert or even calling it an insert. In the 90s….any marvel insert had some kind foiling or chrome, or other effect such as hologram or acetate. You would never see a regular card with no treatment called an insert. And those boxes were much more overproduced and cheaper than these to buy at $250….

Seems like UD is putting the focus on comic cuts and relics, at the expense of regular inserts, which were once fun to pull.

The rehashed art is also hard for me to get into….but I expected that since it’s marvel beginnings.

UD marvel insert in 2023

Fleer inserts in the 90s era

*: not just UD either. See it in modern baseball like flagship Topps inserts.

I’m not a fan of booklets. Will probably pick up a few packs once it hits ePack though assuming pricing isn’t too steep.

I think the chase will be the lineage comic cut booklets. They are only /5 and pretty cool concept. Unfortunately a pretty big portion of the 30 card checklist is second rate characters though. Why not do Wolverine for example?

But in FUA they are thick, so premium, right? right? For $250 a box, that's just silly for this product.

But yeah, most of those inserts look like they belong in Annual. In fact, I can't really see how this set could be differentiated aside from Annual aside from maybe the booklet Cuts and the splash page Cut. But my guess is we'll start seeing those in more releases now.

(Also, unimportant, but another set that should have come out in 2021, is being called Beginnings 2022, and it is now the middle of 2023.)

Just looked over the checklist. For my pc characters, I have one Buyback /10 and a 1/1 Splash Page Jumbo cut, the latter of which I will have to check to see if he is even on it.

Fun...
