I've never submitted a card for grading, and am looking for suggestions.
The card is the "Pepper Girls" card from the 1980 Police Charlotte O's set (the one with the Ripken). It's in nice shape, maybe an 8 or better. ![]() It's so scarce (none listed in the Beckett Population Report, only 3 in the PSA Pop Report (graded at 3, 4, and 7)), and 2 in the SGC Pop Report (4 and 5) that it's hard to guesstimate the value, plus the value would be drastically different depending on the grade. The ripkenintheminors.com site says that a PSA 7 sold for $1600 in 2014. I don't know of any other sales. Searching for "Pepper girls charlotte" at Worthpoint doesn't show any sales records for single cards. So I could submit it to PSA. With an estimate of <$1499, grading it would be $100; and for an estimate of up to $2499, it would be $150. Plus shipping and insurance. I could submit it to Beckett, if I could figure out their process and prices. Can I submit a $1600 card for the "Standard" rate of $50? I can't find where the differences between their Standard, Express, and Premium services are described. Plus, there would be shipping and insurance (I assume) to add to the total. And for SGC, it looks like it would be (declared <$1500) $30 (grade) + $15 (S&H) = $45, or (declared >$1500) $85 + 15 = $100. So, what should I do? Am I interpreting all of the prices correctly? (and I've got to say that it was more complicated than I expected it would be to figure all of this out.) For a card of this value, is the difference between a PSA, Beckett, or SGC significant? What value should I declare? Am I shooting myself in the foot if I guess low on the value to save money on the grading fee? |

I am in no way, shape, or form a professional grader, but I don’t think that’s an 8. It looks lower. My advice would be to send it to SGC for $30, see what they say, then decide if you want to cross it over to PSA. SGC grading is legit, even if their resale values are lower than PSA and BGS.

I can tell you that there are for sure a few 9s on that card.

Valid opinion to the OP’s query any way one looks at it. What’s up with your remark?

Looks like this is the 1981 card and Ripken was in the 1980 set. And as stated above, there’s a PSA 7 listed for $139 BIN. This isn’t worth sending to PSA.

If this card has been unsold on ebay at this price since last year, then it obviously isn't worth slabbing (although PSA thinks it sold recently -- they have the same registry numbers). |

I'm not sure this card is ever worth grading, unless Ripken is one of the girls there in drag. Cards like this with nearly zero redeeming qualities shouldn't be graded unless one of these ladies is your grandmother or Hilary Clinton or someone else who actually became famous.
It's a novelty. |
