Default Need help with values for large inherited coin collection

So a little backstory, my dad started buying coins when he was a kid but got out of the hobby for most of his life until about 2011-2013 when he started putting some of his savings into coins. He was sick at the time and had to sell his business so this became kind of a job for him cataloging his whole collection and everything. He died very suddenly in 2014 and in the blur after his death the computer he cataloged everything on was thrown out. It is such a tall task so ive basically been ignoring it but im trying to get back on it. The biggest issue is that my dad sold much of his best stuff to help pay for some bills so his best graded coins went to Heritage and to local coin stores so im left with a handful of graded coins but thousands of ungraded coins with no idea what to do. Long story short we are flying blind except for these.

I am very familiar with the sports card market so i get that most grading sites overestimate the coins value and ive found very few if any comps on ebay so does anyone have any tips on:

1. How to accurately price coins on ebay
2. Where i can find some help on how to grade these coins

Merry Christmas to all and any help is appreciated.

Connor

You should go to a trusted local coin shop, IMO, and ask for an appraisal. You can only do so much online when raw coin condition is important. I would recommend hearing on Collectors universe forums as well. Lots of very smart coin guys there.

Second the trusted local shop, but that is also hard to find and settling on prices for ungraded is tough unless you can get with someone to do a consignment type deal for a flat fee.
Unless you think you have some really valuable raw/ungraded coins it's probably best to just sell to a dealer, assuming you need or want to sell, and let him/her deal with the hassle of selling and or grading the pieces that are worthwhile.

As far as your graded pieces....Ebay prices are going to be your best gauge on the top grading companies.
I'll give you my 2 cents and others can weigh in - In order, the top 3 grading companies will command the best and most consistent prices you see in the online price guides and ebay final auction prices - coins graded by PCGS will command the best prices, followed by NGC and then ANACS.....just about any other grading company is crap.....the few SEGS in the picture will not sell for anywhere near the price the stated "grade" they give them.
PCGS and NGC are the 2 standards (think PSA & BGS in cards) ANACS is very reputable and just a cut below the top 2 -- Everything else is really just a company started to scam people on ebay and hand you some BS grade

Very true about SEGS regarding grades, but they were very good about attributing varieties. They were the only company at the time to attribute "Zerbe" coins.

With regards to the ungraded stuff, it is a challenge. I have a ton of ungraded coins (and baseball cards). I feel bad for my family when I am gone, as it looks like alot of work, and I know none of them will enjoy my hobbies the way I did.

I am not sure how the coins are sorted, I would group all of the denominations together. Seems like your father had a substantial collection, and this is a start to getting them valued. Silver and gold coins are all worth something, even in the worst condition.

Finding a trusted coin shop is the easiest way to get a valuation, but I have had experience with shops that I trusted and they were still only offering me 35-40%.

You can send me a PM with pics, I can give you a quick valuation!

Appreciate the help. Biggest issue is I don’t know who to trust locally. My local guy only works part time and often offers 20-40 percent value and basically refuses to look over more than a couple ungraded coins. I’ll see if I can get some pics for you that would be very helpful!

If you list them on Ebay the coins that are ungraded will settle at their apx. worth less the Ebay fees.

My question to you is did he finish grading them because if he didn't then you could have a hidden gem tucked away that a dealer will flip for X more.

From what I have seen the dealers in my city just give an x percentage of spot silver or gold and will only pay the premium for extremely rare coins.

Also old doesn't mean rare. Even mid 19th century coins aren't "rare" unless they were short minted or recalled or true error coins.

You might want to check into greatcollections.com I have never used them, but sent a relative there to sell off a mini hoard of gsa morgan silver dollars. They handled all the grading submissions etc. I never really heard much from their experience, but it seems like a good way to sell depending on value. I think you'll get killed on fees if the coins are too low end.

The best price you will get is selling them on Ebay or locally on Facebook Marketplace. The best thing about Ebay is you don't need to know value. Coins will sell for what they're worth if you put good pictures.

Junk silver coins, you can sell for around spot price locally or on Ebay. Locally, you don't have to pay fees. Melt values: https://www.coinflation.com/silver_coin_values.html

If you've got bulk like wheat pennies, just roll them and sell by the roll.

If you don't want to do any work, take a look at auctionzip.com and see who has coin auctions near you. Consign the entire collection to auction, and they'll do all the work for you, but they'll take a 25-35% commission.

Late reply, but shocked no one has mentioned the grey sheet. The pricing there is pretty much spot on in my experience.

A Toned, Proof 63 Seated Half??? I'm shocked no one has said anything about just that piece?! Beauty. The 78-S Vam 17A is no slouch either to the right person!

I know this is an old thread but if the OP is still looking for assistance with coins information I would check out:

http://www.goldismoney2.com

There are active collectors that frequent those forums and even some dealers and they all know what they are talking about and would definitely be able to help you.
