Default Shoeless Joe Jackson photo sells for record amount

The only known signed photo of Shoeless Joe Jackson sold for $1.47 million bucks. Crazy thing is that the same photo sold in 2015 for less then $180K. Shows you how stupid the market has got in the last couple years with people paying for cards and signed items.

Also, how does that make the market "stupid"?

That's exactly what I was thinking.

In 6 years, the market has exploded in popularity and members. Demand for things has skyrocketed and things like this photo have a very finite amount of Supply.

Demand go up. Supply stay same. Price go up.

Duh.

The market isn't stupid but there is a stupid amount of money in circulation. It's gotta go somewhere.

Now turn it into an NFT and sell that for 3M, then make another NFT, and another...

"This photo sold in 2015 with Heritage Auctions for $179,250 -- making for an increase of more than 720% in six years."

Wow!

That auto is better than 99% of the players nowadays, and these players are educated.

The collectibles hobby is completely out of control.

Just go to Pristine Auctions some time and watch what insane highs amounts some of those fools are paying for things.

Complete lunacy.

Autos have really gone downhill, especially basketball. My favorite player just does a lulu... Cam Reddish just creates draws a line.

Because I think what cards are selling for are stupid money. Last couple years prices have went sky high and I think at some point the bubble will burst and these people will be having cards that are no were worth what they were paying for. Like this photo it is sold 6 years ago and now resells for over 700% more?

There was another thread on this, but I think Griffey might be the last great auto.

At least it wasn't one of the normal market manipulating AH's this time.

Players today it's all about volume when signing often they are signing hundreds of items at a time so they are going to give you their intials. You are also lucky if you can make them out and it's just not a short scribble. That's why older players are the best most still take time to give you full name autos.

I totally get that, if I had thousands of cards to sign, I'd probably just initial them lol

I remember the lot this was part of. There was a host of absolutely incredible vintage (fountain pen) autographs of some of the most popular Hall of Famers from the first decade of the turn of the 20th century. I thought the prices were fairly reasonable at the time and bid on it but ended up losing out. I would have typically bid higher but didn't trust Heritage.

Do we know the provenance of this photo or did it magically appear out of thin air? Just curious

There is an episode of Strange Inheritance that tells the story of this photo. Just YouTube it. Can't do it with my phone right now but maybe someone can post the YouTube video on here for everyone to see the story.

... Joe had pretty nice hand writing for someone that's suppose to be illiterate ... wasn't there a Washington football player that signed with an "X" because they couldn't write

Hobby’s also been a haven for launderers.
