Default Frank Thomas 1992 Fleer Rookie Sensations Error

I need my 40+ year olds to help me with this. I purchased a Frank Thomas Fleer Rookie Sensations last month. I finally had the chance to look at the card when I realized that it is silver foil (left) rather than the gold foil (right) . Any body have an information on this?

Thanks!

The only error I knew of was the no foil. Does gold foil fade in the sun?

Great point. The silver foil is very even on the top and bottom. I don't think it is due to fading foil. I also figure that the borders would start to fade as well. But as you can see, the colors are identical.

I found it in a stack of Frank Thomas cards so I'd doubt it has been exposed to the sun much. But a lot can happen in 29 years.

Checking eBay, the gold shades are all over the place.

I know. It's the silver I want more info on. I've never seen a silver version of this card before.

A few possibilities come to mind. 1. Retail/Hobby or some other distribution variation. 2. Counterfeit. This card was worth faking at one point. 3. Prototype. Either handed out as promos, backdoored, or packed out. 4. Odd printing mistake/variation. No clue as to which.

1) I know that Rookie Sensations came out of Jumbo packs only and are really hard to pull.

2) That is a distinct possiblility. I remember this card was over $100... back in the 90s.

3) If it is a prototype, I wonder if it has any added (or subtracted) value.

4) It could be, this is what I am hoping to find out more about.

I was working at a card shop when these were hot, but I have no clue about variations. The promo sheet was a likely culprit (stupid cheap as well), but all appear to be gold. It seems a goofy error to be fake really, but who knows? I'd bet an early run that got packed out or later printing goof. I'm very curious about this one.

Counterfeit seems possible. But I have to say, both cards in your picture appear to have gold foil. What am I missing?

This one ebay certainly appears silver:

It's just a difference in tone in the gold foil. It happened on lots of sets in the early 90s from all manufacturers. 1992 Topps Golds with silver foil, 1993 Leaf Gold Leaf Rookies with silver foil, etc.

Both look gold to me.
Or am I not seeing a second photo with the silver one?

Is this like one of those Internet viral photos where people see different color dresses in the same photo?

I see two gold foils in the photo.

I think it's just the "Rookie Sensations" lettering as both nameplates look gold.

Thanks for the input everyone. Hopefully you can see the difference now. It's much more apparent on the "Rookie Sensations" than on "Frank Thomas" but the is a noticeable difference in the color of the foil in person.

I’ve seen this come up before in regards to Topps gold foil. I don’t recall the precise technical printing explanation but basically it’s just variance in the printing process. It’s a novelty, not a prototype or intentional variation.
