Default Glasnow injury, the sticky stuff & MLB

MLB needs to protect its players;
Pitchers will drop like flies.
Darvish also alluded to this slippery ball issue many many years ago.

Why can't MLB use a better ball?

I feel like baseball changes weekly….Manfred just sucks! The only thing that should change is Pete Rose….the MLB supports betting & yet the best player in history resorts to signing $20 autos at Mandalay Bay for fun. And to the best of my knowledge he has never tweeted anything stupid so Gen-Z cant burn him at the stake YET either.

NBA is soft, NFL is boring, and Baseball is confusing.

Time to go be a dreaded NHL fan & watch grown men punch each-others teeth out without repercussion.

I think that literally every pitcher uses something. It’s going to be a completely different game

I tend to agree that baseball needs a ball that has better grip and then they can get tough on substances. That would be a good middle ground. Although, I can see many just saying, let the homers fly.

Pitcher's are dropping like flies cause they only threw ~50 innings in 2020 and are expected to throw 150 in 2021.

Not because they can't rely upon sunscreen, spider tack, super glue, etc. If they need substance to throw the ball across the plate, the problem's in their underlying mechanics.

There needs to be a league approved mild substance that all pitchers can use.

He’s already been cancelled for allegedly having sex with a minor. The Phillies cancelled his ceremony because of it.

Sounds like the pitchers should protect themselves - their own fault if this is causing them to be injured.

Your comment is akin to saying “MLB needs to protect steroid / HGH users because they will see a drop in performance, hurt themselves by trying too hard, and not heal as fast as when using PED”

It is not pine tar. Both are sticky stuff produced from pine, but very different things.

Pitchers are dropping like flies because they've been throwing baseballs at high velocity pretty much year-round since they were 10 years old.

Nolan Ryan worked on his ranch in the offseason tossing hay bales.....

One thing being overlooked that was brought up on the Mets broadcast is that the ball is constantly taken out of play these days. Go back to the 80s and 90s and the ball would get scuffed up just by being hit and thrown around. Rosin may have worked back then, but it could be insufficient when its a new ball almost every pitch.

There’s a current Orioles minor leaguer who’s dad (who’s always lived vicariously through his son) owns a “baseball school” in my town. Of course the minor leaguer’s picture is plastered all over the outside of the building with all the buzz words like “arm care”, “velocity maximization”, etc.

Makes me chuckle and shake my head at the same time when I pass by it. I just imagine all the little 12 year old baseball robots in there getting screamed at and getting scheduled for preventative Tommy John surgery.

Yup. That’s the biggest problem. Fresh professional balls are too slick. Do NFL teams have to use footballs fresh out of the box?

Very true

Didn't even think of that

Yep....Glasnow probably threw more pitches before age 25 than Nolan Ryan did by age 40.

Likewise, in the past many pitchers were three sport athletes who were very athletic in general and who developed all the parts of their bodies by playing different sports at different times of the year.

Nowadays, it's just pitch, pitch, pitch, all year round....with TJ surgery expected and part of the plan for when the prospect's arm blows up before he even makes it to the majors.

Do they no longer apply the mud to each ball?
