It’s no secret that the art of fine penmanship is all but lost on modern athletes.
Gone are the days of the Babe: ![]() Christy: ![]() Sandy: ![]() or the Mick: ![]() Now, we are lucky to get a squiggly line or a lazy scrawl: ![]() Among active players, who has the nicest signature? Consider legibility, flow, and flair. I nominate Trevor Rogers pre-MLB debut: ![]() (post-debut) ![]() Last edited by cjraleigh; 06-04-2021 at 02:11 PM. |

The scribbles are exactly why I don’t collect autographs, so laughable

Bonds changed his auto in 2005. Any 5th grade school teacher from the 80s would be proud.

Griffey, Mariano Rivera, and Johnny Bench are probably my favorite living players.

Griffey is by far my #1. If Freddie Freeman's sig didn't look terrible, I would own a bunch of his autos but I can't get past it. Ditto for Acuna

Andres Gimenez has the worst auto i've ever seen early on. he really stepped it up since then and now has a really nice looking auto.
from a toddler to adult in just a couple years. edit: so much so, i have to cast some doubt he even signed those Optic cards personally. lol |

My thinking is that players didn’t have to sign thousands of signatures at a time so they were able to take their time to write well. Panini, Topps probably shove 5,000 cards/stickers in front of the player at a time so they probably don’t take care of writing their name well.

I’ll nominate Strasburg, Patino, Bleday, and Arozarena as top flight autos, sadly I have no Arozarena in my collection as of yet to show off...

I like Juan Soto's signature when he takes his time with it
For the most part you're right though. I remember Harmon Killebrew stressing the importance of signatures to Twins players in the 2000's so guys like Michael Cuddyer and Torii Hunter had some really nice clean signatures. I guess that tradition didn't really carry on after Killebrew's death though. Berrios and Buxton have 5th grade cursive quality signatures and everyone else's signatures look like scribbles.

The two modern players off the top of my head are both second generation, but neither have reached the bigs and one is out of baseball:
Mariano Rivera III and Torii Hunter Jr |
