Default Vintage box of baseball cards for $300. How did I do? Lol

Got a call from a sweet little old lady to see if I was interested in a box of old baseball cards. I’m 99% comics these days, but have recently expanded to cards, tcg, video games, and vintage shirts since the comic game is so competitive in my area. I used to collect and sell back in the early 2k’s, but it’s a whole different game now. Lol.

Anywho, decided to take a shot on the box and did pretty good I think. Conditions aren’t cherry or anything, but it was a thrill finding the Koufax rookie being an L.A. kid. I have limited knowledge of vintage, but felt pretty confident that these weren’t reprints or anything based on her age and how long she’s had them. She used to own a vintage/antique shop and now she’s trying to get rid of stuff she has no use for anymore. She has more baseball and some football, and basketball she said. She just has to find it and she’ll give me a call. So hopefully more to come in the future.

You did great (although it depends on how much you paid). That Koufax is a dream card and a bunch of others are definitely cool.

At $300, you are in the black on the Koufax alone.

You'll definitely get more than $300 for the Koufax if it's legit. I see a lot of reprints of that card on ebay but based on your story it sounds like it is probably authentic. I would definitely spend the money to grade it if you want to sell it

Grade the Koufax and you're good to go. It has already spiked recently and I dont see that one coming down.

I’d give you $400 for the Koufax as it sits if you’d like to lock in some profit.

Default Vintage box of baseball cards for $300. How did I do? Lol

Thanks guys. Appreciate the feedback, was definitely stoked to find that Koufax. From all research I’ve done the cards all look legit. Definitely want to get the Koufax, and probably the Mats graded eventually. I suck at grading vintage, but the Koufax does have a small tear and some creasing. I’m guessing in the 3-4 range maybe?

How do you guys feel about pressing and cleaning vintage cards? I do it all the time with comic books, it’s pretty much standard procedure before sending them in to grade. I’ve heard that it’s kind of taboo still in the card world though.

Do not press, clean, or attempt to improve the cards in any way. Otherwise they will come back without a numeric grade and as altered from a TPG.
Koufax is a 1-3 depending on severity of the crease/tear. If it’s truly a tear you’re looking at a one, if it’s just a crease that breaks the surface a two or three is potentially in play without other issues.

Don't do it. You're already ahead getting the Koufax. Don't be greedy.

It's a little more than "kind of taboo". Nice find!!

PSA 1 Koufax sold on ebay for $650 this week. PSA 3 sold for $1100 on eBay this week. Only problem is you can’t get anything graded at PSA right now even at the highest price level. You could do quick turn around at SGC or CSG but the cost probably doesn’t make sense unless you can get at least $1000 for the card. Other options probably involve a year wait before you get it back graded in which case hope the market doesn’t crash before that.

Correct. If you’re not interested in paying out the nose or waiting a year for PSA my offer stands.

Please don’t press or try to do anything to the Koufax. Also the bin of cards look like a bunch of different years from 50-80s cards so maybe have someone who knows cards a little better also go through them. Could be some 64 high numbers or other stuff that has good value but not a star player.
