No, he's not a HOFer, but has more will power and determination than most of us. After I saw his leg after if was "better" I knew he'd never play another down in the NFL. He surprised me last season by playing

Not even remotely HOF, but a really good man who handled his career ups and downs with class and handled a life-threatening devastating injury with the kind of fight and determination that is worthy of my respect.

And he gave me - a Montana/Young guy - probably the most exhilarating win as a Niners fan I could possibly imagine.

Good for him. He had a solid career and showed even after a devastating injury he could still do it.

45.35 HOF rating. Not even close to the HOF.

not a HOFer, but a memorable player, person, and story nonetheless.

Good for him. He leaves with (most of) his health and millions. No need to keep going and risk more injury.

How many more Super Bowls would the Niners have right now if they drafted Aaron Rodgers over Alex Smith? We would be talking about Rodgers vs Brady as the GOAT.

While he is an all-time favorite of mine as a human being I would never consider him for the NFL Hall of Fame. After what he went through and overcame he definitely deserves a much more respectful first post than the one the Cowboys fan gave him.

Who knows.

Hell, McCarthy was the 49ers OC when they took Alex Smith. So many things would have changed with the one switch of players. GB would have a whole different outlook from then til now. As would the 49ers. Would Nolan still be the HC? Where would Harbaugh have went after the 2010 season at Stanford?

Does McCarthy go to GB in 2006? Does Alex Smith go to GB? or to NO/KC and sit behind Brooks/Green?

All in all, I am glad Alex Smith is going out on his terms. Really really hard to not like him. Does a lot for the community. He does not belong in the HOF, but anyone that watches football certainly won't forget his name.

How many OC's did he endure in his career? Maybe a world record

Actually you misread my post. I wasn't being disrespectful to Smith. Looks like a lot of you missed out on my facetiousness. I was making fun of the fact that anytime any player retires people are ready to enshrine them in the HOF. Like Julian Edelman last week.

I get it and normally I would never have a problem with your post.

I do think Alex Smith deserves more though. Here is a guy that has become a hero/role model to many for his ability to overcome adversity that would break most only to persevere and work his way back into the NFL in order to play the game he loved. Not only that, he came back to a 3-7 team and went 5-1 as a starter and got them into the playoffs.
