Default What would you do if you received a card with a 1/3 inch scratch?

Hi all. I am seeking advice about an ungraded card that I purchased. I understand that perceptions are different between the seller and buyer and that there is always a risk of buying ungraded cards. I normally would accept the flaw if the condition discrepancy was minimal, however this case warrants that I seek some advice. I am sure I will run into this situation more often as I continue to purchase ungraded cards, so I might as well learn how to correctly deal with this now.

Let me start with all the good details of this transaction:
1. Seller quickly accepted my best offer.
2. Card was packed well with sleeve, top loaded, sandwiched between two card boards, blue painters tape, and a bubble envelope.
3. Fast shipping - I received the card in 3 days.
4. Front of the card, edges, corners match the description of the listing.

*What was not mentioned was a 1/3 inch scratch on the back of the card starting from the word "himself" on the 2nd to last line, crossing the past the word "elite" on the last line, and down towards the top right corner of NFL logo. The scratch does not reach the NFL logo though.

Description and original picture of the back of the card:
"Card went from pack to sleeve. Sharp Corners. Card is Mint or better. "

Here are two pictures of the back of the card that I received. You can really see the detail of the scratch if you click and expand my pictures.

So what would you do?
1. Accept the flaw and resell the card. I probably will not recoup my original investment since I will list the scratch.
2. Reach out to the seller and ask for a refund. The listing states that seller does not accept refund. Additionally, what if the seller claims that there was no scratch when it was shipped?
3. File an eBay claim after contacting seller first.
4. Are there any other options?

Some sellers don't have time to look at every card under a microscope, just message and note your issues. I'd also say sellers shouldn't use the "M" word on listings unless Near is placed in front of it. Also, don't buy off eBay to grade- its a fool's task. That being said, what's your eBay name?

I don't sell much cards-wise on eBay, but I cannot imagine being a seller these days.

Howdy, I don’t think I was the seller, but if I was send me a message and we’ll work it out to your approval.

Here’s the link to my sold auction.

If you are not happy with the purchase id probably return. Let seller know. As a seller I always tell buyers this.... As long as it's not like been a month and you are just returning cuz value went down... As a seller sometimes it happens... As long as it's a reasonable amount of time.... Just me... Im sure people won't all agree.

Exactly....not everyone is obsessed with card condition.

I'm guessing that 90%+ of sellers don't look too carefully at their card backs.

The card is perfectly acceptable as worded the way you bought it. Not every card is a PSA 10, there is a reason they sell for more. If you want better, buy them in a slab. I’d say most people want your eBay ID so we can block you from buying our items.

Yep you see people pissed off today if the card does not come out perfect out of the pack saying the card should be remade. People need to deal that not all cards will be perfect and will not be remade to be perfect.

See if Panini will replace it.

Take no less than black label quality.

I hate it when people want gradeable cards but don't want to pay for graded cards

This is why I don’t sell raw cards

And I don’t have an opinion on the scratch, OP might be totally justified, but this is simply why I don’t sell

I don’t have time to check every card every time. They are NRMT.

If it was a PC card, which is why I buy singles, I would never have analyzed the card with my electron microscope. I would have put it in the stack for that player and left feedback that it was received. None the wiser and without complaint. If I was selling from a box I opened and got requests for multiple angled photographs, I’d either block the person from bidding or unlist the card and save it for the LCS/selling in person at a show. So much nit-picking

Likely an honest mistake by the seller. Like others said, sometimes you're listing cards quickly and you miss a problem especially if it requires a certain angle to notice it. Contact the seller.

Philosophically I'm right there with you. If I examined every raw card to see if it was PSA 10 material and returned ones that weren't? I'd own no raw cards.

Wouldn’t bother me. It’s on the back and difficult to see.

I agree with the general sentiment here, however when I sell raw I put "expect 8-9 if grading" and if it's worse with something like this I'll disclose with READ which the final sale price will reflect.

This could possibly pass as that in bulk but PSA hammers back indents if they catch them. If this was express value or higher it wouldn't surprise me if it 6'd. Also wouldn't surprise me if it 8'd. Yes subjective, but it is what it is.

Personally if this is a silver I would take issue with it, base I'd just let it be. Don't like it being situational but that's just what it is sometimes.

If it's one of the "PSA 10 GEM?" listings, I would have an issue with it whatever parallel it is.

Contact the seller and return it, that's not a "minor" issue. It's possible they just missed it and it wasn't nefarious, but it's still nasty damage.

But the wording implies it should be in good shape. "Card is mint or better". Not nrmt (7). He states mint directly which is defined by a 9 grade. He could've put nrmt or better like most people do.

I am with you on something like this usually, but this wording is misleading and there's no need to block op. It's reasonable.

I would also argue it did not go from pack to sleeve. Maybe after 7 years. But the only prizm cards I have ever seen with that damage were Kyler base and RWBs last year. Anything else it's usually from leaving it out, storing it poorly, etc.

It's fine that it played out like this. In most cases I would agree the buyer is probably wrong. But I agree with the buyer here.

Anytime you buy raw off eBay, that's on you to do the research before-hand.

Not every raw is gonna be a Black Label PSA 10
