Default Late friend played AFL football... does he have cards?

My dad's next-door neighbor was Jack Atcheson, the first-ever draft pick for the Chiefs (then the Dallas Texans) in 1960. They got to be good friends, but sadly Jack passed away a year ago. Dad is a vintage baseball collector and I was hoping to get him some kind of Jack memorabilia. I'm not a football or vintage guy myself, so I don't know what might exist. I don't think Jack had a long career, and it looks like the football sets from that era weren't comprehensive. He was a great guy, one of a kind, but you might not have given his card a second look, you know?

I've checked the checklists I could find and didn't see his name, but I guess there might be a draft picks card or team card with Jack's picture. Some kind of college (Western Illinois) or draft memorabilia would be awesome, too, if there aren't pro cards. Wanted to see what ideas the vintage community might have because this is outside my area of expertise. I'd really appreciate any leads you all might have!

It took a few minutes of digging (ok fine, 30 minutes), but I don't think there are any cards unless they were team issued and very rare I'm sure.

That said, you should probably look to get your dad something like this program. Looks like it was the first and only game your friend scored a touchdown in - pass from George Blanda no less!

If you can track down the actual signed program I linked to that would be pretty cool since Jack's auto is on the middle of the front page.

Happy hunting.

Thanks, slightlyrounded! Not sure I'll ever be able to afford George Blanda auto prices for something like that, but it's good to know it's out there.

You may want to see if you can find a playing days photo of him and have a custom card made. Mouschi is a member here on the boards that does amazing custom cards. Just a thought

You also have another problem that the AFL was in it's infancy and gas station sponsored cards or grocery store sponsored cards wouldn't be likely as the league was viewed as minor league football.

In this era of rookie card fever he would have a card, but only veterans and major trophy winners would get cards as a rookie in 60'.
