People buying in anticipation of him taking a run at Gretzky's record? Just doesn't seem like there's any real reason otherwise?

Prior to this season I thought it was the run-up to 700. That's done, so I'm not sure why he is outselling Crosby (or if he even is, I am going by what you are saying).

My two cents
Malkin Young Gun PSA 10 sells for $399-450 Backstromg Young Gun PSA 10 sells for $139-180 Ovechkin is the Man in DC, where I feel Malkin gets more love from Pittsburgh than Backstrom does from DC Collectors. Part of this is yes obviously the numbers difference, but the point is I think it splits the Penguins money further than Ovechkin money gets split.

They’re both great hockey players.
Crosby is kind of a boring, plain-vanilla dink. Ovechkin isn’t. It makes a difference. |

The value skyrocketed once he won a Cup and Conn Smythe.

Ovechkin is also just tracking towards having a higher place in history, shocking as that might have been three years ago. He's passed, at least for a little bit, Crosby in points, even though he has 200 more goals. He's lead the league in goals 7 of the last 8 years. Being a center, two way play, setting up teammates - all that stuff matters, but scoring ultimately matters the most and is by far the sexiest thing. Now that Ovechkin has a Cup and won't go down in history as not being able to win, everyone has permission to do what they want and go in on his stuff. Plus, recency bias - Crosby was hurt last year, and hockey players can fall off a cliff in their early 30s...or they can player 10 more years at Crosby's age. But there's prob some amount of bet hedging going on for some people. |

Not certain where you are getting your pricing data but it seems to be that Crosby still outsells Ovechkin.
PSA 10 Last 5 Ovechkin between $2000 and $2500 Last 5 Crosby between $1800 and $3100 PSA 9 Last 5 Ovechkin between $750 and $1100 Last 5 Crosby between $900 and $1300 BVG 9.5 Last 5 Ovechkin between $900 and $1900 Last 5 Crosby between $1450 and $2250 BVG 9 Last 5 Ovechkin between $625 and $1000 Last 5 Crosby between $1000 and $1025 |

Last three are 2200, 2500 and 3100. Only one was PWCC if you’re thinking of any funny business

Yeah, that might have been overstating it. But Crosby is very, very far behind Ovechkin in the single most important stat, and it's not lost on people that Crosby has gotten to play his entire career with another elite scorer in a way that Ovechkin has not.

I think Ovies prices surged recently as the supply of Ovie YG’s was basically nothing on eBay. There are always lots of Crosby’s available it seems.
That’s my best guess. Although both had jumped 25-50% in last month it seems. |

As great as Crosby is and how quickly people want to pencil him into that number five spot on all time lists, Ovechkin has a reasonable chance to be the all time leader in goals scored. That moment transcends hockey and adds value that two more cups and even the golden goal cannot for Crosby.
Crosby might be the superior player in terms of peak or team accomplishments but if Ovechkin breaks Gretzky’s record his cards will skyrocket. |

Crosby is super boring to those that don’t understand Hockey.
Those that get the nuance? Obviously he’s one of the best ever Casual people like Ovi Crosby is Tim Duncan.

If Crosby is #5 on “the list’ i suppose Ovie could be right there as #6.

I don’t know much about Tim Duncan but I assume he’s boringly elite and never says or does the wrong thing. And throw in vanilla interviews?

Honestly the biggest factor in Ovie closing the gap is more non Canadians entering the market as the hobby has grown. Rule of thumb is that old school Canadian collectors pay more for Canadian players. Trust me I’ve heard this idea talked to death over my many years of collecting and visiting my LCS and other shops across Canada. Old school Canadian Collectors were a huge part of the hockey market. The new investor market (assuming they aren’t Canadian) doesn’t care as much about a players nationality. Just my two cents

Even in a shortened season Ovie will pass Mike Gartner and Phil Esposito on the all-time goal scoring list this year, and will have a shot to tie or even pass Marcel Dionne if he manages more than 25 goals which is doable for him in 56 games. Each new guy he knocks off will make more headlines and the hype will climb.
Should he manage to pass Dionne this year it would put him 5th all time and only a few back of Brett Hull, whom he would pass early into the 2021-22 season to take 4th. Then he'll be 150~ back of the record at age 36. He will hit a wall at some point and slow down due to age but it will be later in his career than most players IMO because he's not depending on his speed to score. He'll always have his shot and PP prowess which will age better. It might take him five years or so to grind out the remaining goals if he has the desire to play into his early 40s. Whether he actually passes Gretzky... I dunno. He's lost a lot of time already due to lockouts and the pandemic. And he's made it clear he wants to finish his career in Russia. He'll have to be willing to stick it out and grind out some low scoring seasons towards to end to scrape by the record. Even if he doesn't I think he'd finish his career no lower than 2nd ALL-TIME on the goal scoring list ahead of the legendary Gordie Howe. That's a legendary career in its own right and like others have said Ovie has been a larger than life and likable face of the league for his entire career. He's an absolute gift to hockey and even the staunchest Canadian collectors have to admit it. Last edited by Inferno; 12-30-2020 at 05:05 AM. |
