Default Sealed boxes for long term

I'm starting to look at 5+ year investments and sealed boxes seem to be a surefire bet to increase in value.

Thoughts on years/sets that aren't outrageously expensive right now?

Any big 2021 releases to try and grab?

Cheers

Outrageously expensive is a very relative term these days that you're going to need to define with dollar amounts.

I think you’re looking at a possible disaster doing this.

I say this as someone who passed on 5 One and One cases at $4K a pop. On one hand, they’ve essentially doubled. On the other, who do I sell them to safely? I’ve got 3 hands, so on that one what happens when everybody buys wax to sit on it?

NT boxes from this year still have yet to really bump and they haven’t really been opened in mass quantity either.

Every time a box gets opened it means there is one less out there. I see there being good long term value regardless. My opinion anyways

And to the previous poster, I meant like some are already a few thousand. Trying to find some sound investments under 1K for now.

Just buy as much Mosaic as you can.

It will mature like a fine wine, we already know that the rookie class was banging and they are all off to good start this year.

It's affordable, available and you will get a healthy, but not spectacular return that is still easy to sell on later down the line instead of worrying about trying to shift $6k boxes.

Just my 2c, considering you are looking at under 1k.

What happens when everybody has that same mindset and nobody opens boxes though?

I don’t disagree with your premise at all. Just don’t see much wax being opened outside of the first week or two of a product’s release.

maybe I'm in the minority here but I think Mosaic is significantly overrated

This is what basically killed the Star Wars figure market in my mind. Everyone saw how valuable the originals became over time so everyone bought up the prequel figures to keep and hold. They've never really gone anywhere. I was a young teenager so I collected them because I enjoyed it. Ended up donating about 100 figures to a children's hospital a few years ago.

My fears of collecting wax is buying it at inflated prices. I have a small stash that I add to when I can but my only guiding principle is to buy at, or close to, MSRP. A lot harder to do in this world but I got in early on Topps Chrome and Dynasty Formula 1 a few months ago, which have already seen huge price increases.

that's part of the risk of course. I just think over time it's a good play. Especially with the prevalence of team breaks, etc. And I'm a long term buyer.

Not just that, but also printed to oblivion.

If you want to sit on wax for 10 years+ OP, then you do you. IMO it's the most boring way to collect. It's also highly dependent on the draft class, and what hasn't been pulled from other boxes already. The big reason why old wax(86 fleer), Pokemon, and MTG boxes gain value is because there are no numbered cards. Not the case for modern cards. When all the 1/1's, and /5's, and /10's are accounted for, the box better have ICONIC inserts. Once we know that all 10 PMG Green and 90 Red Jordans are out there, the cost of Metal will tank.

If you're talking short term flip, then disregard the message and enjoy.

I mainly just enjoy collecting the newer hot retail releases as they come out and stashing as much of it as I can at MSRP. Obviously hard to find much these days either online or in-store but you can eventually get a decent amount if you put in the time. Really think it's hard to lose long-term stashing the best retail releases at MSRP.

Perhaps at some point I'll start to think about hobby versions of prior releases and which ones may be worth a gamble. I just love wax because you don't have to gamble on a specific player; it's fun having exposure to all of them via wax.

People open them one box at a time it's just slower than it used to be. Not all years are equal either so its always a gamble. Not every class is gonna have a Luka or Zion either. Those were fluke magical years. Things will calm down eventually.

But collecting boxes is almost a new fad now just like collecting cards so who knows anymore. It's really taken off in the last 2 years. I was lucky and got in it before it became mainstream.

GB's are one of the prime driving forces in buoying the prices of modern, overproduced sealed wax.

I don't ever foresee them disappearing, but if they do.....

For 1k, try 90s boxes. Bowmans best from 97-99 or finest from the same years. Still relatively affordable vs modern panini.

Too much trouble to sell. Sold a 2003-04 Skybox LE on eBay. Buyer opened box then tried to return it. I won eventually but was enough headache that I didn't want to sell anymore on there.

Yep, I ended up ripping a NT FOTL box this way. Price never really moved and I had a series of financial windfalls that let me justify it. The two RPA’s were Isiah Roby and Nassir Little.

That absolutely sucks man, I'm sorry to hear.

That's coming from someone who's been considering buying a 03-04 SkyBox LE Hobby box too.

Some people are just lame.

it’s unbelievable how many straight up scumbags there are in this hobby (and this world). guys that sit around all day thinking up ways to steal money.

i don’t sell a whole lot of anything right now, wax or singles, but probably my biggest concern is how do you safely sell anything at market price with all these scammers out there.

The answer to this is very easy. Send Chris Park at Blowout an email asking for a buy price. He will quote you a very fair price, with a bit of room for him to make some money. Ship your box. Get paid by Paypal Friends and Family the day they receive your box. The end.

Life is not all about squeezing every single last penny from every transaction you do. This applies equally as a buyer and seller.

Regards
