Default Which 5 cards would you pick up before its too late?

A few of the current players I collect are Mookie, Acuna, Soto, Trout & Albies.

Just curious what 5 cards you think are a bargain as of right now?

Does not have to consist of any players listed above.

Today's prices will be considered a bargain tomorrow. Pick up what you can today.

Do you care as a collector? Who doesn’t want to miss a card they may never see again?

Or as an investor? Where the appreciation vs. today is highest?

The former seems to be a more interesting question, as the latter is just the same “who will be the next Trout” question that we get every week

So assuming the first... and given your players: I love the Acuna + Albies ‘18 Update “future is bright” card... especially in Independence Day #/76 style.

Bet that will be almost impossible to find soon as it is a true collector special... they will be locked away.

I think this is an indication this price run up is unlikely to be very durable

Thats a good one from a collector's viewpoint. I've missed it a few times on ebay and have a couple of parallels, but even if it doesn't break the bank those cards are disappearing into PCs.

From a these cards might go up soon viewpoint, I like the Braves troika of young pitchers. Fried is no where near as affordable as he used to be, but I can see the three reeling off a couple of brilliant seasons and getting a nice bump. Not sure about long term with pitchers though.

From a long term perspective, roll the dice and choose your favorite prospect. I like Bichette(which means he will bust), but there are at least a dozen to talk yourself into . I also like Biggio and Guerrero as undervalued complimentary pieces if the Jays take off.

1951 Bowman Willie Mays RC in a PSA slab before he passes away and key Ichiro RC’s before he becomes the very first Japanese born MLB player in the HOF. Those are my two suggestions.

2014 Topps Update Mookie Betts US26
2018 Topps Update Juan Soto US300

These 2 cards raw are extremely cheap right now and have tons of room to grow. Closest players you can get to Trout without being Trout imo.

Also, pick up Topps mainline refractors of future HOFers, all years. Most are dirt cheap until they hit the hall, then the prices skyrocket. I'd pick up Pujols, Ichiro, Beltre & Miguel Cabrera.

Or it could be an indication that younger collectors/investors don't really care for vintage.

Personally, I was born in the 80's and never saw either of those two play. I could easily pick up some of their cards, but don't care to.

I would say pickup key rookie cards of those coming up on HOF election in the next few+ years such as Ichiro, Pujols, Schilling, Cabrera, verlander even bonds and Clemens and then sell them once they get elected to the HOF (when their card prices will be at their highest point) then sell for a profit. I would stay away from guys like Soto, acuna and tatis base ship rookie cards as every other collected out there is hoarding and PSA slabbing them in hopes of getting rich! There will be way too much of those guys out there in the future (just wait until PSA catches up on their backlog!)

If you want a quick flip, I truly believe that Pete Alonso and Vladimir Guerrero jr are going to have breakout years in 2021. But low now and flip when they win 2021 MVP. Just my opinion but I’m just an old fart!

To piggyback on this, if I didn't see them play, I don't care for their cards or how "iconic" they are.

I have no idea if prices have corrected higher aside from all tides rising, but back in like 2017 I was surprised how inexpensive Ernie Banks was relative to his peers. Same goes for Billie Williams, Ron Santo and Ferguson Jenkins. At least it did as of 1 year ago.

Also Ted Williams —-especially card #1 of that set where he is a yellow card seemed too cheap. Also I think Jackie Robinson 1953 #1 seemed undervalued back then. Haven’t looked at how fast these have moved relative, but Clemente really took off in 2016 or so which bummed me out because I would have liked a few more of his cards.

As for not seeing them play, I hear you, but as a history guy, I am obsessed with a player who I never saw play because a stadium I grew up watching games at was named after him. So it just depends.

Aaron
Mays
Koufax
Clemente

Just to name a few, probably Seaver and Ryan RC’s

Nothing after the 60s as you can find cards in some shape or form for cheap of a given players RC whether it’s a low grade Schmidt or Henderson or whoever u want.

This is a pretty common sentiment and one that should worry vintage collectors to some degree. As a segment of the collecting community, "ages out of the population", there could be an increase in supply and a decrease in demand of former heroes of even Mantle and Mays. Baseball has always been steeped in history, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a plateau or softening of mid to low grade vintage.

I’m with you, I only collect contemporary players I can currently watch and enjoy with my kids/family.

But if I were an investor, probably the only thing I should be investing in is history. That is about the only durable asset in sports memorabilia. And history is mostly in vintage cards.

Very good point! 20 years ago there were a bunch of Bob feller, yogi Berra and Bobby doerr collectors. Nowadays if you ask today’s collector if they want a Bob feller or a mile trout card they would pick mike trout every time! So your right as old farts get out of the hobby the greats might be forgotten as people today want Soto , tatis and acuna not Mays, mantle or Aaron. People want to collect players that they watch play or that they connect with. Don’t believe me? Ask someone if they want an acuna card or a Harold baines card! Or a yadier Molina card or a Carlton Fisk card or Clayton kershaw card or a warren Spahn card!
