Default Say Something Positive About Panini Basketball

I've noticed a lot of complaints/criticisms of Panini basketball products on here since Panini got their exclusive NBA license over a decade ago. Many of these criticisms are warranted IMO. But it seemed like it would be useful to have a thread where only positive comments are made about Panini. Please only post positive comments since the negatives have been covered elsewhere.

I'll start: Was going through a recent purchase and came across some early Panini sets that had much nicer designs than I remembered. 09-10 Studio and 09-10 Court Kings both had nice artistic designs on the base cards. 12-13 Prizm remains a classic and never fails to put a smile on my face when I acquire an addition to this set (and not for monetary reasons). They look awesome.

I don't have any Panini cards. I will probably break down and get one soon. I collected from 2001-02 to 2004-05. I am mainly trying to finish some sets from these years. I don't like the fact the NBA gave Panini a monopoly. I miss topps chrome and finest. Panini does have a few nice products though.

I like how they got some famously tough signers to sign cards, such as Barkley, Ewing, Kemp, Iverson and Webber.

They make a nice variety of sets to cover many tastes. From court kings and more artist flair, to noir and the more sleek and shadowy designs, to the super shiny fanatics in revolution, to rookie collectors in chronicles, to set collectors with hoops and donruss, to the big swinging Ds with national treasures. There should be something you like in something that panini makes as a collector

I like revolution and status, great looking cards. And kaboom inserts are fantastic.

Keeping the Chronicles Brand alive for 2018 after 2017 was pretty much a flop was a very smart move.

Imperfect company that like most companies has a bunch of great products as well some mediocre products. I don’t care if Topps or UD get into basketball. I buy the card not the company that printed it.

Panini basketball cards are licensed, which a huge positive compared to the garbage they produce on the baseball side. That's all I can come up with.

Update: Earlier tonight, I looked through some 2019-20 prizm basketball cards I randomly picked up at a Walmart before everything got crazy with them (well, as crazy as it ended up getting at least). I didn't hit anything that seems to be that worthwhile, but I took a closer look at the actual card designs, and they looked really nice. My collecting is largely focused on baseball, so I'm jaded toward Panini because of their unlicensed stuff in that market, but I can see why their basketball cards are popular.

The variety, although there is a lot of over production, it's nice to have a plethora of products to choose from. A lot of unheralded veterans continue to be in products, which is nice for the older fans. I also think that continue to try new things, as well as recycle some popular ideas.

I will third the variety. Panini makes so many sets that they have a lot of bases covered in terms of designs and people's interests. I find what most people really like boring. Most people don't like what I like. Both of us can find something to collect.

Some inserts have been gorgeous of late. Color Blast, Net Marvels, this year’s Court Kings acetate rookies.

It is hard to find a JSY card set where the jersey is not the focus of the design. Which is understandable. It is a big deal after all. As cheap and over produced they got, that's a freakin peace of cloth that is is inserted in a card, hopefully from a game used jersey that your favorite player wore in an NBA game. However, I still think you cannot beat a classic design. A simple white border and a great action shot is all a card needs on the front. It tops every JSY, RPA, refractor or acetate in my book. Of course if every card would be made that way, it would be boring. So variety is needed.

When Panini brought out Silhouettes it was still rough around the edges, but by 2015-16 it got down to near perfection. A classic design with the player in the center and a game used jersey for the backdrop. Finally a jersey card that does not scream laundry. The plain jersey seamlessly fits into the design, and it is topped with an on-card auto. IMO the plain jersey ones look better than the patches. Why would you want to cover a nice patch anyway? Sure very nice looking patches do exist where the cutout does not take away from overall look of the patch, and the patch does not take away from the player's silhouette, but too often a colorful patch makes this type of card look busy.

I have gifted away my only Silho, but I am planning to get another one. Wish I picked up a Kobe when they were around $200, but I think I missed that train.

(not my card)

Beautiful Kobe, and a great write up on the set. The Silhouettes are incredible. In the midst of all the noise, Panini has really released some incredible cards.

Panini got bots to pay thousands of dollars for Toy Story stickers. They got my respect after that!

Fact - Panini’s rookie year autos of stars (Zion Ja Luka Trae etc) are seeded at a better rate than when Upper Deck had the license.

Don’t even try and debate me on this unless you were around when group breaking did not exist or if you’ve never opened cases of product by yourself from the UD/MJ/Lebron era. Not counting any ncaa releases - there were products that MJ/Lebron were guaranteed case hits which is one of many reasons for the discrepancy between NBA/NCAA prices.

I love the innovation that Panini has brought to basketball cards. I'm thinking of huh, well, hmm, huh, well, can't really think of anything...

Is it Panini's fault? Or is it the fault of the NBA for giving them a monopoly which is the best way of killing innovation?
