If you're looking to collect and not sell, why go graded especially since you are thinking low end?

Graded cards look better imho. Especially vintage in an SGC tux.

Default Depends

Depends on what you consider to be "vintage". For instance, I only collect cards that were issued in the 1910's and 1920's. You could choose Goudey's from the 1930's, or Bowman's or Leaf from the 1940's, or you could go for 50's or 60's.

So, it is difficult to give you advice until you get a little more specific.

Good luck collecting vintage. You are making a good decision.

If you’re really interested in having fun in the hobby then dump your woman and get a better paying job.
Seriously though, figure out what you like. Does high grade matter to you? Does having a larger collection or smaller but better condition and more hof rookies. Go after certain set building?
I would suggest not buying or just buying light for awhile until you figure out what you’re after, your budget and what are fair prices.

Find something you like. Learn about it. Become an expert.

Trying to “know” everything is fairly difficult when it comes to vintage IMO

This. I got back into the hobby (along with everyone else (nice to meet kindred spirits)) in February or so and wasted waaaaaaaay too much money trying to figure out what I wanted to actually collect. Turns out I like the more obscure vintage issues like the W517, W514, T201 Mecca and S74 silks (aka semi-affordable).

Oof, I'd kill for a time machine. I'd go back and save a bunch of money last summer then skip to the end of 2020.
