Default My First Submission (SGC)

Sent in my first submission to SGC and the cards just entered post grading so maybe they’ll be on the website in the next day. I’d like to do a blind reveal but the wait has been horrible so I don’t think it’s possible. I’m not an expert but will list my opinion on what I expect and then what the actual grade is

1 1960 Mantle. Hoping for a 6
2. 1958 Mantle. Possible 6 possible trimmed
3. 1957 Mantle I think it’s a 5
4. 1956 Mantle 95% trimmed authentic
5. 1966 Mantle should be a 5
6. 1964 Mantle trimmed authentic
7. 1959 Mantle all star 5.5
8. 1958 Mantle all star 6
9. 1954 Mays hoping for a 5
10. 1969 Reggie Jackson 6
11. 1975 Brett hoping for a 7.5 but maybe 7
12. 1979 Ozzie hoping for 8 but could be a 6
13. 1980 Henderson 7
14. 1975 Yount 6.5
15. 1984 donruss Mattingly 6.5

These are all PC Cards. Wish me luck!!

Good luck. I have built a friendship with a guy who tells me SGC is absolutely brutal these days with vintage grading. He won't submit to them but he definitely buys their slabs. Curious to see how it pans out against your expectations.

SGC will be my go to company if and when the day ever comes that I decide to get my cards graded.

When I rejoined the hobby back in 2016, I learnt as much as possible about grading and seen with my own eyes (without the PSA grading scandal) that SGC was the most consistent, most reliable, albeit tougher, imo, than what PSA could ever be.

I've purchased cards already in slabs from PSA, SGC, Beckett and GAI, and I, by far, prefer the SGC slabs over the others as well.

Maybe things have changed with SGC, I don't know, but I'll stick with my opinion until I see something that makes me change my mind.

SGC is tough on vintage but you can pick up some stellar cards in their slabs for a much better price.

I’ve noticed in my short time that sgc is tougher and more consistent on vintage too. I wanted to make sure the cards are authentic and look nice in the cases. The grades are more of a fun bonus because I plan on keeping them and displaying them.

I agree with you. I have only been back in it for 16 months now, but I have slowly gravitated toward SGC. Most of my big recent purchases have been SGC, although I do buy PSA and am not afraid to dip into the BGS waters occasionally. I'm not sure who is the most consistent to be honest with you, but I feel SGC tends to offer more value, as their toughness is more or less on par with PSA, whereas BGS might be 0.5 to 1 grade more lenient. I realize this topic has been beaten to death for years -- that's my basic take, which I suspect is conventional wisdom. All three companies are mistake prone as you'd expect in the subjective world of grading.

I have started to build up an inventory of nice cards that are in old SGC slabs and would benefit from their newest slabs, which I quite like. That said, I just can't bring myself to resubmit them for the new slabs. I wish they would open a satellite office in the northeast with a quicker turnaround for reslabbing, but I hear you just have to wait in line with the people who are getting graded. I understand the wait time for SGC reslabs is 55 days or so, or at least that's what my bud just told me. If there were a local quick reslab option I'd be all over it. They could just open a little office outside of Boston or New York, since retail space is probably dirt cheap these days. Bring in a couple of those machines and hire a couple of guys and charge $20-25 a card. I'd personally reslab at least 10 different cards, probably more. The price would be worth it because I wouldn't have to deal with shipping/insurance.

Perhaps I'm nuts and there's not enough of a market for this. But it seems like they could make some money with a little expansion.

SGC is about 90-100 days right now,i just had an order pop today from 6-11.Agree with all that say SGC is more tuff on grading. But imo they are fair, and way more consistent with grades.

They can be brutal on vintage cards as has been said before.Far as i can see they do not pop control like PSA,You get the grade your card deserves no matter who the card is.About all i can ask for is the grade the card deserves.

Agreed on them being tough but fair. Got a few back recently. Really rewarding to have these older cards with mint grades from SGC.

What other people call "brutal" I call "accurate." Most graded cards are wildly overgraded, in my opinion, but I know you have to make your customers happy and inflated grades keep the engines running.

Of the same cards I own in equal grades, the SGC card is always in better condition. So I am happy to buy SGC slabs for keeper cards (especially at the usual discount) and PSA for cards to sell. I sent in a vintage order in the summer, including three tobacco cards. An Alcindor rookie that could be a 5 but wouldn't be surprised by a 4. Good luck with your order.

More cards are overgraded than undergraded. Change my mind.

Yup, still need to be scanned, entered into system and shipped. My last post-grading (in June) took ~5 days; I suspect you have a few more days to wait

I got my grades today and they turned out ok except a couple.

1958 Mantle 5.5
1957 Mantle 4.5
1960 Mantle 4 UGGHHH
1966 Mantle 5
1964 Mantle 3 I’m pretty sure this is trimmed..weird
1958 Mantle AS 5.5
1959 Mantle AS 5
1956 Mantle Evidence of trimming
1954 Mays 5
1980 Henderson 8
1969 Reggie 5
1975 Brett 7
1979 Ozzie 7
1975 Yount 6.5
1984 donruss Mattingly 6

I had in my order to have the 1956 encapsulated so I’m not sure if they did it since they didn’t list it as “A”. I really hope they did cuz I don’t wanna send it in again and wait over 4 months again. Overall the grades were ok, just a little disappointed in a couple like the 60 Mantle. It has a scratch and is diamond cut but is really nice with great corners.

Btw I don’t know why I said this is my first submission. I’ve sent in 1 card and another time 3 cards. I think I meant medium size submission. I don’t know, I’m old give me a break lol.

Is this considered a very quick turnaround?

Not bad overall. You got the 8 on the Rickey Rookie which is great. You also got graded on a card you thought was trimmed. Would be curious to see the '60 mick that got a 4 that you were hoping for a 6 on.
