Default Surprises and Disappointments

We’re at a point where fast and slow starts will be more difficult to reverse as the Abs and IPs start to grow. Who are a couple guys that have opened your eyes and a few who make you shake your head so far? This can be from a fan analysis of your team or card standpoint, doesn’t matter. I’ll start:

Good- Jesse Winker and Dinelson Lamet
Bad- David Dahl and Tyler Glasnow

Just about gave up on Winkers chance to make an impact but the last 10 games or so wow.
Lamet is dominating with pretty much just 2 pitches. I pray he can add a change up to legitimize his devastating FB/slider combo.
Dahl had a decent week to start but has done nothing but strike out and leave runners on since. He looks horrible.
Glasnow had a spectacular 1st start and hasn’t thrown a strike since. Same control woes persist and velocity dips when he’s trying to aim the ball, making him hittable.

Good - David Fletcher. He's the Angels team MVP. Has a better WAR than Trout

Bad - Ohtani, Upton, Adell, Pujols

My two biggest disappointments this year so far are Eugenio Suarez (team) and Tyler Glasnow (card standpoint).

Suarez has looked completely lost at the plate. I keep waiting for him to turn it around, but it hasn't happened and doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon

As for Glasnow, I really believed/hoped that he would have the control issues figured out. The Cy Young hype around him is long gone now

Good - Bieber - It was nice to have a huge stash of the talk of baseball for a change. My entire collection is paid for and still have so much to move if I want!
- Sonny Gray - Glad to see him back to relevancy!
- Tatis - Healthy!

Bad - Lindor - Sure would like to see him do something with people on base.
- Robbie Ray - I thought his mechanical change was going to make him a CY contender
- Major Stars & Rookies with injuries - I was so excited to see Judge and Stanton healthy and mashing. Its good for baseball discussion even if you don't like the Yankees.

Bellinger has been total disaster. Lindor too. Bichette and Tatis have been breath of fresh air. Sorry to lose bichette.

I’ll put Yastrzemski in the good category. He’s been so consistent game to game. Love his approach.

Victor Robles could be worse, but he needs to get some consistent production for once.

Haven't seen much of any particular team besides the Cubs but Bryant has been awful & seems to be going through the motions. Javy had one good game but been bad too. Rizzo has a low (for him) average but is still an on-base machine. Happ has probably been the most pleasant surprise.

Bad surprise by far has been Walker Buehler

Most disappointing "should've seen it coming" is the Angels once again screwing up pitching elbows in Ohtani and Canning. Canning will be on the IL soon, definitely hurt and trying to pitch through.

Do you think card prices will be impacted much by final season lines from this shortened season? I realize in this day and age they're impacted on a daily basis, I guess what I mean is - if someone outperforms expectations in 60 games will the market treat it as if they've outperformed over 162?

This thread starts with the idea that fast and slow starts are now hard to reverse. I don't disagree but we're still talking about barely over 20 games. Blackmon still has a .486 BABIP. Still way too much noise in this sample.

If Lance Lynn wins the Cy Young award are his cards going to skyrocket???

It'll be interesting to see which direction is impacted the most. I don't think things will be altered too much, but Soto's and Tatis's stuff has been skyrocketing.

I think the playoffs could make a big difference though.

It seems like this.
Players off to slow starts have lost way less value than those who are hot have gained.
Hot guys are still doubling/tripling all the time
Cold guys like Belly or Vlad have lost what, 25%ish at most?

Mix of guys I'm personally interested in, mostly not for card prices, but just like them as a player, have fantasy shares, or think they're interesting to follow-

Good
Trevor Bauer- Breakout year in 2018, then regressed in 2019 and was not good for the Reds after being traded. Pitching like a Cy this year, 2 runs 19.1 innings and 32 strikeouts
Zac Gallen- A lot has been said on him in another thread already, I picked up a bunch of fantasy shares but didn't expect anything like this
Tyler Duffey- Nobody will care, but I've watched him for ~5 years now and the transformation has been incredible. He's been one of the better relievers in baseball since the AS break in 2018

Just re-read OP and Bauer and Duffey aren't really surprises, but guys that I weren't sure what we'd get from and happy to see it thus far

Bad
Mitch Garver- Doesn't seem to be seeing the ball well yet. He's still crushing the ball when he hits it, but the K rate is way up and he's been missing a lot of pitches. Really easy to root for so hopefully he'll turn it around
Kris Bryant- Not sure what the problem is. K% is up a bit and BB% is down a bit, but doesn't look like he's making much good contact. Yet the Cubs are killing it
Shohei Ohtani- Super bummed over the elbow injury, it would be so fun to watch him dominate on the mound and at the plate. He's not hitting that well, but not too worried about that yet, just don't like that I'm concerned if he'll ever be the great 2-way player we hoped
Marcus Semien- Starting to pick it up over the last week, but hasn't at all looked like a top-3 MVP guy

Good - Zac Gallen

I know he has his own thread going but that change up is making these hitters look hopeless.

Bad - Madison Bumgarner

Man, what happened there? Lots of innings on the arm but the guy hasn’t looked locked in for a single start.

Before the season I decided to stock up on update parallels of one of the two former Vandy stars in 2019 Update. I chose Bryan Reynolds over Mike Yaz.

Good: Mike Yaz
Disappointing: Bryan Reynolds.

Though I do think Reynolds will bounce back.

Good: Soto
Bad: Vladdy Jr

I'm high on both guys, and really hope Vladdy can figure out how to lift the ball and start mashing dingers!

Disappointment: Devers, he looks lost and unfocused. Hopefully just because of the messed up season.

Surprises: Verdugo is better than expected and is also a bit of a character.
