Default The Official 2020 MVP race - NL and AL

Short season so why not …

Right now I'd go Trout and Soto

Soto missed too much time IMO. Will likely hurt him by the end of the year. Same with Judge.

Judge may not be the same upon his return.
Soto however, already has caught up to the pack. But the NL race will be tight

Soto's raking, but I wouldn't say he's caught up the pack.

I'll agree somewhat but once the plate appearances start slowly making him eligible to be considered amongst some stat leaders, look out.

I was thinking this earlier.. What does 'qualified' mean this year? How many AB's are necessary to qualify for the batting title?

Interesting question! Based on where Fangraphs has the “qualified” line it is currently about 60 PA... which is approximately 70% of max. So if Soto made it above 70% (which I think is possible?) he ought to be “qualified” at the end of the season.

Tatis right now with his stats and his team doing better than expected. Soto right behind him.

Blackmon getting the shaft. And they're 13-9.

Nelson Cruz and Brandon Lowe are probably the top two in the AL at the moment. Although, while I’m usually reluctant to consider pitchers for MVP, Bieber and Lance Lynn should also be in the conversation. (Honorable mention to Judge and Bichette, who have been knocked out of consideration by injuries.)

In the NL, Tatis is obviously hitting a lot of bombs and producing a lot of runs. Soto hasn’t played enough games yet, but he sure is looking impressive. But Mookie, J.T. Realmuto, Charlie Blackmon, Bryce Harper, Jesse Winker and Max Fried are all making big impacts, as well.

Corey Seager would probably be in the conversation if he hadn’t missed some time. And don’t sleep on Dominic Smith. He might just be swinging a hot bat at the moment, but sure looks good at the plate.

I wonder if OBP will lose it's end-all importance now that Trout isn't leading in it. WAR, too.

Haha! Have to try and get Trout to win any way possible???

His teammate Rendon, in the other hand, has taken over the mantle from Trout as best sabermetric member of the Angles, it seems.

3.1 plate appearances per team game has always been the minimum.

Nelson Cruz has to be pretty high up in the AL right now

Top three at least along w/Brandon Lowe and Anthony Rendon

Those three are well ahead of the next part of the pack

OBP and WAR should still have their place in the analysis of a hitter, regardless of how Trout is doing in them. If those stats were someone’s argument for Trout before, then it is disingenuous to ignore them now.

Pitchers have adjusted how they are attacking Trout. He is seeing more strikes than ever. Walks are way down, strikeouts up. Can he make the adjustments needed? That’s the fun of baseball. We will see.

I miss the days when we only cared about AVG, HR and RBI

If Padres make the playoffs and Tatis keeps it up, he’ll win.
