Default 2019-20 Topps Chrome UEFA Champions League Discussion

I thought there was a thread buried somewhere for this... but THEORETICALLY we should be getting this product at some point.

BO still lists "July TBD" on the release calendar... which makes me skeptical it is still accurate.

Anyone with any good info on the updated release plans?

Still boggles my mind how anyone can feel anything but taken advantage of dropping $300+ on a product that was $60 1 year ago. I know the topic has been beaten to death accross all forums but that doesn't make the situation any better.

Like all gambling stories the posts you see here will only be the big winners. The other 95% of those who break this product will just have to wallow in their own misery, silent and all alone.

I still dont believe that soccer/football collectors are buying these cards/boxes at the insane prices. It must be the investors who are selling to other investors who think that they are getting a great deal. Some of these hot players will end up having average or below average career.

Simple supply and demand. If you don't want it, or don't see value in it at that price, don't buy it. I don't see what the big deal is here. Clearly there is enough demand to support these prices....otherwise they would still be $60.

What was the value of an Mbappe base TC when the boxes were still $60...?

And...?

Nobody says you have to hold anyone's cards until their career is over. Seems rather myopic to make all decisions based on whether or not you actually believe someone will be the GOAT.

as usual, I'll work on my Aguero rainbow, but I don't have any hope of getting any boxes off the Topps site.

So self defeating - just sell everything already. The negativity sucks.

"I am so very mad that this hobby is much more popular now, and that my collection is worth exponentially more than it was just one year ago!"

That sound about right...? Maybe this should just be used as a signature rather than posting the same thing post after post ad nauseum.

Reminds me of the prison guard in The Shawshank Redemption who inherits a lot of money and then loses his mind because he has to pay taxes on it.

You're fixated on the cost piece ($60 then, $300 now) but you also neglected to point out the benefit/returns piece. Prices were $60 then because people were paying a couple dollars for Messi/CR7 refractors, Sancho rookies, Mbappe chromes, etc. The cost to 'gamble' has increased, but so have the returns.

That doesn't apply when it comes to new releases.

Nobody is leaving me a stash of new, unopened soccer.

^^^^^^ This. I chuckled when I read your first quote. Exactly

I noticed this complaint more from Soccer collectors than those of other sports. They just can't handle the speed of value adjustments taking place in the sport. It was long overdue. The cards of legends and super star young players were selling for too cheap for too long and as smart investors started to enter the sports cards market and they saw the value in soccer cards and stated to scoop up the cards and reaping the rewards. I have zero problem with that. That's how the market works.

Mbappe for an example has been one of, if not the brightest young super star we have seen in a while (like Zion of Basketball) and his cards were selling for peanuts compare to other sport top young superstars (Acuna, Zion, Luka, even McDavid). Well that got corrected rather quickly and legends such as Messi and Ronaldo's first Prizm cards started to garner attention they deserved and now each one of those cards are some of the hottest cards in the market. Given that there aren't that many cards to choose from, relatively speaking that is (compare to other sports), these cards of legends, I believe, would continue rise in value. For people who collected other sports but a true soccer fan, I am having an amazing time collecting Soccer cards

I've seen several calendars that say "July tbd" or "July 31st TBD". The 29th has come about because it's the last Wednesday in July and Topps usually release boxes on Wednesdays, so if it's going to come at the end of July it will be then. I haven't actually seen anything that says the 29th specifically yet though. I saw a tweet by blowout buzz mentioning several release dates have been moved into August, it didn't say which products but I wouldn't be surprised if this is one. Pure speculation but the first Wednesday in August would be the last Wednesday before resumption of the Champions league so I don't think they would want it coming out any later than that.

I'm more curious about the checklist than the release date. Will Haaland be in the set? Fati? I know Greenwood is not since MU didn't qualify. who are other potential big RCs could be in this set?

I had a follow up to my original post that I never completed, the whole having a career thing got in the way. Look, I too am now able to sell what I had left of the Topps Chrome cards from the past 2 years for far more than my buy in. Yet I stand by my original post simply because the way I personally enjoy the hobby.

Each of us has our own view of what we want out of this hobby. Do I enjoy turning a small profit (smoking for free if you will), of course. But is pure profit my only goal? Of course not. I have a career to handle that aspect of my life. And I would NOT be busting wax if profit was my sole purpose.

However I do miss being able to stop by the LCS on my way home on Friday, grab a few boxes of whatever and whether I chose to spend $65 that day or $240, at least I had a choice on the low side. Put the kids to bed, relax, drink a few beers and enjoy my Friday night break. Whatever I spent was the cost of enjoyment just like going out to dinner. But when the buy-in is now a freaking mortgage payment there is very little relaxing to be had. So yes, i miss being able to enjoy what previously brought me happiness but is now no longer practical.

And I do feel the increase in pricing goes beyond practical supply and demand considerations. It has the feel of price manipulation and unsustainable greed beyond what should be considered reasonable. But again, 1 working man's opinion. All you kids are so smart no doubt you are making millions.

P.S. You all just see Pulisic do Liverpool defenders dirty!?!?!? Why the hell did Mount start over him?

Have these all been bought already or is it a first come first served situation?

I think Haaland gets one. Then the odd debate over his preferred "first Topps Chrome" begins, I think.

I don't think Fati does. Too much of a limited checklist to get him in for Barca with other names that they'll likely use. But it's hard to say other than that...

Maybe De Ligt? Torres? Rodrygo? Vinicius? Most have had something recently in Finest or Chronicles. But again - 100 card checklist likely so that's tough.

Very well said, cannot agree more with you
Yes i d rather my cards worth 1k then 10k with the topps chrome boxes are $60 rather than $300plus

This hobby started with people buying packs and opening them to find that “special” cards

Topps release prices have been low-ish, it's been the re-sale prices that have rocketed. It's just the difficulty of getting direct from Topps that sucks now.

If you sold your $1k collection to buy $60 TC boxes, you'd get 16 boxes.

If you sold your $10k collection to buy $350 TC boxes, you'd get 28 boxes.

So you'd rather be able to afford fewer boxes? This doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of how AWFUL the return was when TC was $60 a box. 18 months ago a Messi 2017 TC UEFA BGS 10 Orange sold for $82. Not even enough to cover the cost of the box after grading and selling fees.

But please, let's return to those times!

BO has a date of 8/26 now on this which I am ok with. Way too much hitting at once which is sad to say after so much nothing.

Wow, that's after the Champions League Final and almost into next season (in fact the Ligue 1 20/21 season will already be underway). I agree there is a bit of overload right now but there is basically a Champions League tournament running for two weeks with almost a game every day and they are going to miss that window. It won't effect Topps as they have / will sell out anyway but it would be great to open whilst the tournament is actually running.
