Question Investing, In One Box or Single Card??

My 2-yr CD @ 4% of 30K just came up for renewal. Won't renew at 1% at this time. Saving 10K for emergency situations but having 20K to invest. So, seeking a sports card investment for 1 year or less. What's better? A single box or a single card? Looking at some possibilities.

1. single card auto of MJ or LJ?
2. 1990's MJ insert card?
3. 1996-97 or 2003-04 Topps Chrome BK box?
4. 2012-13 or 2018-19 Prizm BK box?
5. anything else in BB, FB, HK or BK?

it all depends on which singles or boxes

in general, boxes is safer
I want to say 2018/19 prizm or optic hobby boxes as the 2012/13 prizm is already way too high. last sold over $7k

if single, MJ fleer RC , LeBron RCs and Exquisites of the MJ/Lebron/Kobe

best of luck
by the way, your question here represents the current "hobby approach" of a lot of people, this explain the "crazy high" prices and recent massive "rise" in trading cards value.
Lots and lots of people are "investing" in sports cards
I just came to full realization recently, I know I am way too slow to finally accept this fact

The amount of 'investing/investment' title threads from the BO fetuses is both alarming and sexy.

If you seek to realize some good short-term gains, I'd say to load up (certainly not all of your $20k) on a lot of 2019-20 Chronicles BKB retail configurations via FB/IG immediately after a restock occurs. A lot of people will seek to unload for a lot lower than eBay prices.

Otherwise, I'd recommend picking up some serial numbered RCs of LeBron and Curry (there's a lot of undervalued ones still available, you don't need to go for the TC refractors, etc). If you do enough research, it never hurts to add good MJs or Kobes too.

Some other undervalued and/or riskier plays include players like: Durant, Anthony Davis, Tatum, Simmons and Mitchell.

Never invest your politics or your heart.

Buy blue chips.

Yep, if it's really about investing, do this and kick back.

But it's not very fun.

Learn as much as you can so you can make your own decisions. Know what you are buying in terms of condition, authenticity, etc. Some threads on BO are created just to hype what they already own. Also buy multiple items rather than just one item so you don't have to buy/sell it all at once.

I know I am stating the obvious but sports card speculating w/ a 1 year or less time horizon ( risk / active investment) is quite a leap from parking money in a bank cd (zero risk / passive investment).

I like boxes myself because you're playing the whole draft class and not betting on 1 player. That's what i would do for newer players. That's what i do myself. There's a lot of people that would pick a sure fire single of a HOFer or soon to be one. Nothing wrong with that either. All depends on your risk tolerance and what you're looking for.

Right now for me personally if i had $20K to spend i'd probably go with 4-5 boxes of 13-14 Prizm Hobby. Giannis is pretty much a given to win MVP this year. If he wins 3 in a row next year and possibly a championship in the same time frame there's no telling where that stuff might go. 12-13 is already near $100k a case right now. Giannis is in 13-14 though and it's not far behind. I like anything 18-19 too, great draft class.

I'm not sure cards are a great one year investment, especially at current prices. If you are buying rare cards of GOATs for a 10-20 year hold, then I can get fully on board with that, but a one year horizon is scary.

I'd go with a 2012 prizm box.

1. First year of an iconic product. This cannot be stated enough.
2. Double rookie class, LOADED with great players: Lillard, Davis, Kawhi, Kyrie, Klay, etc.
3. Pretty scarce already, but has so much more room to move.
4. Bonus: USA set checklist

I love 2013-14 prizm too, but after Giannis, the rookie class is relatively weak. The 2012 rookie class is DEEP.

I think if your time horizon is one-year, Zion is your best bet. If he makes a leap his second year like Luka did then his cards will skyrocket. It doesn’t really make a difference if you invest in wax or cards I think. If you’re going wax, you can do a case of 19/20 Prizm Hobby or two cases of Mosaic. If it’s a card, I’d go with a colored Prizm RC.
