Default Topps Tiffany PSA 9 vs Base PSA 10

Looking at some late 1980’s rookies (1987 Topps Bo Jackson, 1989 TT Deion Sanders, etc.) Tiffany PSA 9 sells for a similar amount vs the Base PSA 10.

This brought me to question future projection on each, which is a better buy? I know this may vary card by card. Thoughts on a lower card grade Tiffany vs Base in a higher grade?

I would go with tiffany psa 9 all day. Actual rarity vs. manufactured rarity in my mind.

IMO I would want a Topps Tiffany 9. A lot of times I can't even tell a difference between a 9 or 10. If you want to, you could easily get a 1987 Topps Bo Jackson PSA 10. Just find 20 good examples, spend $$$ in grading fees and you could easily get one. You then might also get 18 PSA 9 Bo Jackson's which are now worth less than the raw version because you spent between $10 and $20 to get it graded and they sell for $15.

I agree, but a centered 9 only. Sometimes a PSA-9 is a 10 with '9' (or worse) centering, in BGS terms. Here's a card I pulled from a sealed set, graded, and sold. 10 condition...8 centering.

We can view it objectively.

PSA 9 Roger Clemens 1985 Tiffany just sold for $409.00

PSA 10 1985 Clemens paper : $835.00

The '85 Clemens is one extreme. The '91 Chipper Jones could be the other extreme.

Clemens:
Tiffany 9 = pop 629 (43% of 1463 graded)
Base 10 = pop 345 (1.36% of 25,393 graded)

Chipper:
Tiffany 9 = pop 271 (37.5% of 723 graded)
Base 10 = pop 5,457 (53% of 10,000+ graded)

Chipper 10 is $50-60 range.
Chipper Tiffany 9 is in the $350-390 range.

I'd rather have a 10 of the Base Clemens than a 9 of the Tiffany.

I'd rather have a Tiffany 9 of the Chipper than a base 10.

POP matters for sure. My example was not a good one.

I think I paid $30 for the base 10 and $120 for the Tiffany 9. This was pre current market insanity (base about $135, Tiffany $450). I’d take the 9 all day!

TIFFANY ALL DAY.

I don't think you should focus that much on the current pop reports when you compare the base card 10's and the tiffany 9. Reason being is that base cards were WAY over produced and people really would not be motived to submit the base cards for grading so the pop report is not a real reflection on how available they are. Where folks would be much more motivated to submit the tiffany cards.

I have a lot of Tiffany RC on my target list. I think finding some true rarity in mass produced era is a good buy. I’ll take the 9 in most cases.

Buy the card, not the flip. Tiffany 9s all day every day!

What is an easy way to tell a 91 Topps Traded vs 91 Traded Tiffany? I have some white back Giambi's that aren't Tiffany but don't see any obvious differences.

Only one I've got. So, on a similar note, which of these two would you want?

Tiffany looks like brighter stock. Guess it's just something you have to know yo look for since it's not written on the card anywhere.

They have a glossy finish, so they look much brighter. It’s very easy to tell the difference when looking at the cards.

I'm definitely in the 9s are fine club!

As long as people are allowed to submit cards multiple times, the number of PSA 10 graded cards out there will only go up. The number of Tiffany cards is what it is. Easy choice imo.

PSA 10's for me are never to be in my collection. I will sell them and buy 6 PSA 9's. With most PSA 9's and 10's the difference are so slight that I don't care about the number. The 1987 Tiffany cards are so much better quality that I would take it over the massed produced 1987 regular series every time. I would actually prefer a PSA 8 Tiffany over a 10 actually, but it would be silly because of the prices...

When buyers see the word Tiffany they seem to automatically hold it in higher regards ... cheers and Happy 4th all!

I recommend buying the better card, not the better grade. Tiffany 9 gets my vote.
