Default grading question - centering

i've always been confused and have never found any written rules. if a card is off center 70-30 how many 16ths or 32nds does it measure off and if its 55-45 top to bottom what is the max grade it can obtain 6-7 or higher? i've only graded a few cards and am often confused with the result. beckett guide lines are vague at best.

Mathematically you can’t translate centering to inches because not all borders are the same size. 70/30 centering on 52 topps for example is likely to be further off center than a ‘67 or ‘69 topps card. I realize it doesn’t totally answer your question but you can’t equate centering ratio (60/40, 70/30) to inches on a uniform basis.

PSA explains their centering requirements here:
https://www.psacard.com/resources/gr...andards/#cards

Maybe this would help you:
https://forums.collectors.com/discus...mment_12439220

The 55/45 is a percentage. For example, a card with a width of 2.5 inches may have a border all around of 1/8th an inch (=4/32's). If one side is actually 3/32 and the other is 5/32, then the centering would be measured as 5/8 (the denominator is the sum of the numerators) = 63% on the side of the 5/8ths So the centering of that card would be 63/37 in that direction.

would like to ride this pony one last time. i saw an 86-87 fleer # 57 jordan rc bgs 6. ok subs 9.5,8.5.8.5 but centering 5, so what did i see normal side to side but off noticeably top to bottom (but not ugly) what card that gets 31.5 pts gets a 6 why not 7.5 or 8 oc. i just don't get it.

Well, BGS doesn't have an OC qualifier. Their rules state that their overall grade is not an average, but rather skewed largely toward the worst grade. Because a creased card which would get a 3 surface subgrade can't get any better than a 4 VG-EX in totality. I think maybe edges and corners can get a little higher than 1 grade improvement.

Wow, I didn't realize PSA counted 70/30 as near mint. No wonder I see so many cards that seem way overgraded (as well as cards with bad, snowy surfaces that I wonder if they deteriorated inside the case).

More cards are overgraded than undergraded. Change my mind.
