My apologies in advance if there is a Deandre Ayton thread from last year... I tried finding one using the search function, but came up empty.
From watching his performance last night, he has a decent midrange shot as he was 13-15 on the night and they weren't all dunks. DA had a great game last night against one of the top teams in the West, at their place. I know "Big Men" don't get a lot of love in the Hobby from collectors... but what are some honest thoughts about him?

I think his game could develop a lot more offensively versus Drummond as he's only 21, but with Booker on the team... that may hamper his production. Not saying that Booker taking a majority of the shots isn't warranted, as he is a star... I'm just saying that seeing him against WCS and KP and pretty much scoring at will against some decent Bigs, why don't they feed him more instead of always settling for outside or low-percentage shots?

Hobby wise you kinda answered your own question. No one really cares. Even if he becomes an all-star ala Embiid you're not looking at anything shocking in terms of value. Basketball wise? I'd love to have his skill set on my team. He has all star potential.

I'm just now getting back into collecting again... why is it that there is such a HUGE disparity on the bigs?

There's lots of reasons people bring up. Personally for me it comes down to two things.
"Smaller" guys are more relatable. People can see more of themselves in them (however ridiculous that reality is). Big guys just can't do it with out a guard to facilitate their games. In many cases when a big finally wins it all they're part of a 1A 1B team where as in the NBA we've had many championships where the Guard/SF is the undisputed 1. There are exceptions. But they're very few.

He's my favorite player in the league. I'm actually surprised to see where his silver prizm prices are right now, especially with the "big men get no love" thing.
You could get a PSA 10 Prizm Silver for $99 or less before the start of the season. Now, they are hitting in the $150-$170 range. So, I think people are taking notice a bit, but not quite at the rate of the guards. |

His prices certainly lag behind other young players that put up lesser stats. I picked one up for under $110 right when he came back from suspension. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Was SOFT at U of A....... and is still SOFT with Suns. Doesn't have the motor long term to be great.
Basketball wise this is ^^^^ hobby i think people don't care one way or another. IMO Last edited by CoolG; 01-12-2021 at 01:24 PM. |

Reminds me a little like Olajuwon.

His prices were pretty good last year and then he got suspended and his prices dipped. Now that he's back and playing well his prices are definitely moving up. If you got in cheap, you can absolutely make money on the flip, but people are starting to notice that even though he's a "big" he's still only 21 and averaging 18 and 12 so far and seemingly getting better as each game passes. I personally think that there's still plenty of room to make money on his mid-high end stuff right now, when you compare the prices of the top guys from recent years.

I think he's what you would hope Zion turns into, a high-quality double double machine.

I don't see it that way... did you see how he defended LeBron and Giannis at the end of last season? They beat the Bucks in both meetings last year and he had the most possessions guarding them. I know that last year, he was having to learn while you see Luka and Trae take the league by storm... but learning is also a good thing, as long as we don't see regression. He has steadily improved this season when he's been able to be on the court for a majority of the game and been given the rock. I know he had that suspension issue, but hopefully, that's behind him, too. I just see a lot of potential and as long as his head is right, he could be in the top 3 of big men behind AD and KAT, but also challenging their thrones.

I've been wondering this myself. I think there is a lot of upside with him basketball-wise. I'm not sure if that will translate into hobby success but I think he's going to be really good. I'm all on-board the Luka/Zion train but I think Deandre will be good as well.

I didn’t watch him in college, and don’t really care about him now. One stat though that gets brought up is his FTA. He’s averaging less than 3 attempts per game, which is horrendous for a big. If all he does is shoot midrange jumpers, he can maybe be the next Aldridge, which isn’t exactly a great thing for hobby

Reminds me of a larger STAT. Stat was a beast but injuries killed his career off. Ayton is huge and has way more size than Stat ever did; however I think Ayton attacks the rim fairly hard and dunks with less ferosity than Stat, but close to it.
Really good upside on Ayton imo

From someone who is holding a lot of Ayton and no Davis cards. Davis was FAR more advanced defensively at this point. Ayton is a bum on defense. He needs to very much advance his offensive game if he's going to be a bum on defense for his whole career.

Andre Drummond has blocked a million shots in his career and had plenty of numbers to make it look like he's a good defender, also another guy who is a bum on defense.

So we going to act like Davis in his second year 20 and 10
Is that much better than Aytons 18 and 12 on less shots with a higher fg and free throw pct And he is just finding his groove now as he’s missed 30 games It’s not as big of a gap as you think my friend |
