Default HOF prospecting

I'm not sure if there is any interest but what the heck, that's never stopped me before. I created a HOF collector's thread (link below) but one of the rules in that thread is that we don't mention anyone by name until they are actually elected, not even no doubters such as Pujols, Ichiro, Jeter etc.

Even so, many of us speculate well in advance and buy pieces of players, managers etc that we feel will one day get enshrined. I do it mostly for fun but sometimes to pick up pieces before the HOF premium gets attached. I'm genuinely curious about how far out the average HOF collector buys and who they have bought. This thread can be a place where we discuss who we are speculating on and why we are doing so ... or it could die from disinterest, I guess we'll see.

I currently have well over 60 players that I have in my "future HOF" collection and there is no way they all get elected. I don't consider autographs with young stars such as Devers, Acuna, Tatis etc to be a part of that collection although I do own at least one of each, my brain is complicated. I'm talking about guys like Andruw Jones, Jim Kaat, Dale Murphy, Jeff Kent, Luis Tiant, Steve Garvey etc.

Poor Jeter. He gets in and you still cant talk about him. Is it cuz he didnt get unanimous?

Lol, no, he is fair game as of yesterday. I only use him because he was the biggest example over the last couple of years that guys wanted to mention by name but couldn't. Having said that, he got way closer to unanimous than I feel he deserved, put me in the Jeter is overrated camp.

I have been buying my speculative guys. A few rookies here and there and some Topps Golds for my HOF PC.

I was buying Larry Walker! Done for now until the new wears off.

My current spec list though
Ichiro
Pujols
Justin Verlander
Max Scherzer
CC Sabathia
Lou Whitaker
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Yadier Molina

I only collect one autograph of every HOF'er, every single guy on your list is also on mine and I already own an autograph of each. I think all eventually make it although some have a much greater climb ahead than others. I even had a Harold Baines although never in my wildest dreams did I think he'd ever get enshrined.

Lol i know I alos, believe hes overrated. I mean...........like ill concede the fact that hes first ballot. I guess. But unanimous? If unanimous selections were common- one every 5 years, then sure. But man thats crazy that he got all votes but 1

I do this, but stick to guys who are more of a "surprise" (so Veterans' Ballots) - Did well this year with Ted and Marvin and was only stuck with some Whitaker "Bags." Hoping to do the same next year with a small handful that I think will make it!

I've bought many of them on COMC but too many of the sellers think they're sitting on gold. Did get my Atwater there though, I agree, he's due.

I had a Marvin and Ted too. Also have a Lou, quite surprised that he didn't make it but think it's only a matter of time. It is more fun to go after the fringe guys, better savings too. Anyone knows to grab an Ichiro or Griffey, having a Luis Tiant make it feel a bit more rewarding. Even so, the internet makes it almost cheating. It's extremely rare to have a Baines pop up from completely off of the radar.

Only thing is I think Polomau(sp) is probably the only lock so I wonder if they would go two safeties(even if both compare very well).

I've seen this discussion before and have never understood it. What does it matter if it's two safeties, three wide receivers or five linebackers? If they're all eligible and worthy on the same year, put them in. That's my thinking though, I know voters like to do exactly what you are mentioning and Troy is also very due. Does one have to wait? I'm pulling for Steve for one reason only, I still don't have a Polamalu because he doesn't sign much and the ones he has signed are very expensive.

I agree. Maybe it is like a "Well this guy was better at the same position so he should go in first."

Frankly, there are alot of people who think they are two smart voting. Not everything is so serious

I have all but one of the people they have getting in. I'll wait on Bob Howsam.

I seriesiously had to ask "who is Bob"?!?

BTW I like this HOF stuff... actually is how I collect current players (and probably the same for scores of other member here on BO)... the fun is trying to predict who will put up a HOF career. I care less about the flavor of the day, or if the person is the next Trout... every year there will be on average 1-2 new rookies who will be voted in eventually - how can we tell who??? And it frequently isn't today's hot take... takes time for the player to really show they belong, and can be consistently impactful...

Me too. No chance I speculate $100 on a guy that I've never heard of. On the off chance he gets in I'll pony up, even if it costs a bit more but if he doesn't, I don't need that auto sitting in a box. I'm good with an Andruw Jones, I was a big fan and I like having his regardless. Sorry Bob, you were probably a stud but I have no attachment.

I agree. It's funny to look at my speculating box and see how many guys were on a lock pace and then fell off the map (Nomar, Felix, Johan etc). It really makes it fun to identify guys and then watch and see if they prove you right ... or implode.

haha! and in Bob's case, guessing it will be hard to collect his cards, as he was on the management side of MLB (and NFL!)

Amen. I flipped Ted Simmons 71 Topps a month ago and Larry Walker's 90 Leaf last night. Both flips I owned less than a day.

I actually felt bad that I sort of insulted him so I did go and read his Wiki right after my post. I'm strange that way, as if he was going to haunt me because I wouldn't pay $100 for his auto and that I'd never heard of him. Anyhow, the guy does have some serious accomplishments but I stand by what I said before. IF he gets in, I'll buy one but that's a big if.

I collect the players I like, fortunately a lot of them are from the 80's and 90's. Some will eventually/ maybe enter the HOF later on. With that been said, it sucks when the price jumps on the cards I didn't get yet that I want.

I have been doing the same on a small scale. A goal of mine is to have a graded RC (or a card for the older players) in the HOF. Really the folks in don't move extremely big, so I try to stay ahead of the curve and get a few RCs of the new class.

Ichiro and Pujols are on my next to buy list, but their cards seem to be pretty pricey even at a graded 8.... unless I am looking at the wrong cards for them both
