Default *** The Official 2020 CHICAGO CUBS Thread***

Noticed we didn't have one made yet, even though nothing really worth talking about yet, either.

Kinda glad we haven't traded anyone who has been rumored yet, especially KB.

I know we need something done with the roster, but I'm not sure what's doable.

So far all we have is a couple signings of pretty much filler players. Hope something nice can or will happen before spring.

Looking forward to the season but the roster won’t be filled with big signings this year.
Management are getting under the luxury tax cap this year so they don’t go over it for a third year in a row next year. (Serious penalties for third year.) This way it resets and they can take a bigger run at free agents in 2021.
KB will be moved, but probably not until his service time issue is determined - then teams will know what they’re trading for. Baez will be signed. Contreras is on the block, and possibly Schwarber too.

The most interesting thing to me is seeing how their TV network works out. I honestly think it is going to fail in 2-3 years once initial investments run out. I think they are drastically overestimating what percentage of their "fans" are actually die-hard Cubs fans willing to make TV service purchasing decisions based on whether they can watch the Cubs.

Lemme guess...Sox fan?

We'll get ready to add the quotes for your "fans" in the next couple years too when the bandwagon and the stadium actually fills up. I'm sure you'll claim they've all been die hards for years though.

Marquee will be fine I think. Just look at the Dodgers. They rake it in from their network even though most people in LA can't even get it. I loathe the Ricketts with the heat of a thousand suns but they know how to make money. Now if they'd only spend it on talent we'd be somewhere.

I ran some auctions last week for a handful of raw White Sox cards, maybe 6 or 7 total, nothing crazy

Had a buyer on a Moncada with “cubs” in his eBay ID

Had a different buyer on a Tim Anderson that also had “cubs” in his eBay ID

That is all.

I am absolutely a White Sox fan, doesn't mean I can't look at the situation objectively. I've lived in Chicago area my whole life and within 2 miles of Wrigley for 15 years now. I know dozens of real Cubs fans and then 10x that number of people who are "fans" but can't name anyone on the team besides Rizzo and Bryant. The Cubs are a very unique team/business because the bulk of people who support the team by going to games don't necessarily care much about the actual team.

I'm also sure lots of "fans" will soon be wearing Sox hats around the city in the coming years. I'll refer to them as "fans" then too. After they're done with the Sox, they can put their hats in their closet with their Cubs hats and Blackhawks scarves.

I don't disagree with the number of let's say casual fans, but the same is true of the Yankees and Dodgers and their networks are fine. The Dodgers made 8 billion from theirs and no one in LA can get it. So saying that a casual fanbase will tank a network by not buying the channel doesn't make much sense. Dodgers fans want to buy it and haven't been able to but it's still going 6 years later. YES has been around since 2002.

They are on Directv, so I get them across the lake.

Since the Cubs are hellbent on not taking on salary, I trade lester for anything, his salary is more important than the 10 wins he may get this year. His salary will be used to get Castellanos signed.

Yeah but who wants to give Lester 20 million?

Also has a full NTC

Dodgers signed Alex Wood for $4 mil. I can't believe we didn't take a flier on him, especially for that amount.

I like the Tony Kemp/Alfonso Rivas trade though. Didn't know who he was but looked at his stats and has a nice AVG to go along with a really solid OBP, screams leadoff hitter to me.

Lucked out and got a Contreras voucher. Getting this signed at Cubs Con. What color marker you think and where? I was thinking silver paint but there's so much going on.

Kyle was dealing! Good to see Happ and Rizzo go yard. I was worried about both specifically. It’s great to get a little early confidence built especially for Happ.

Yeah, I agree. I think this is Happ’s second opening day HR. Let’s hope it portends better results this year!

Always nice to start off with a win. Let's see if we get pre- or post-All Star version of Yu tomorrow evening.

Looks like pre. Hopefully this is just a small sample size issue. Go cubs!

I didn't realize Kipnis is now a Cub. That is a hell of an infield.

Well today wasn't fun. Just when I thought War Bear got us back in the game, they let Yelich get it all back.

That’s a lot of pitchers. I really hope they can score runs without the HR this year. I’m definitely going to miss all of those Castellanos doubles.

I expect a ton of up & down all year. We're probably a 31-29 club that could sneak in as a 7/8 seed or just miss the postseason.

Man, it was so much fun watching him last year. Shame to see him go.
